Holding tank vent odor

my boat was originally delievered with a 1" vent line to a 40 gallon holding tank. i tried every kind of chemical out there to get the smells under control. after the tank was pumped it would stay neat and tidy smelling for a max of 48 hours. at the end of it all, i installed a filter and the problem went away instantly. i think it is a function of the water temp where we boat, its usually 85 degree water and that seems to influence the bacteria production a lot.

BUT, and this is a BIG BUTT-- we don't do #2 in our head (inland lake), and we tell guests the same.

Well, what do you do if you or a guest feels the need to "do #2" while on your boat? What is the point of having a head on the boat if it isn't used as one?

rawidman, I'm with you. If you have a head, then use it! That said, we've just come to live with a smell after the first 3-4 flushes (after sitting about a week). We use odorlos and we pump out about twice a month, at least. Doesn't matter, we still get a smell after flushing the first 3 or 4 times. We've just learned to live with it.

My "new boat" is eight years old. The PO used chemicals in the holding tank. I switched to Odorlos, which I have used for years in my "old boat". I had a stink which kept getting worse. I finally realized that the hoses were the original ones and not high quality at that.

I replaced them and cleaned up everything and the stink went away.

I do have an odor after flushing for the first time after a few days of non use but it's inside the head compartment. After the first flush there's no more odor. I'm beginning to believe it's the dead organisms in the seawater used to flush the head.

No big deal, though.
