How close do you live to your boat?

I tend to like to boat in the SF Bay but I live closer to the delta.

I moved the boat from Martinez to Oakland to keep the boat closer to where I boat which leads to the obvious delimma. Now I live further away from the boat. It's not as easy to pop by and well..just sit on it..which is what I used to do when it was in Martinez.

Martinez..lived 9 miles from the boat..but at least 20 miles from where I like to boat.

Oakland..now I live 20 miles from the boat..but like..0 miles from where I like to boat.

Which is the better trade off?

My personal situation isn't relevant to yours in that we bought a boat that is also our home most of the time. I am curious as to why, with a non-fishing oriented power boat, you like boating on the open Bay more than in the Delta or up the Petaluma or Napa Rivers. These are always very personal decisions, so I am not trying to be critical. In my case I would have moved it another 20 miles in the opposite direction, if at all.

I live about 15-20 minutes away from my boat, which is in the Delta by the Antioch bridge. We do all our boating in the Delta - we don't even do the down-bay cruises with our clubs. Not even remotely interested in boating in the bay, so the Delta suits us just fine!

Driving 1/2 hour + in traffic each way to go to the boat will get old fast. I like the idea of having lunch on my boat at lunch time.
Also during summer the Delta is much more fun.

Right now its about 150' from me while setting in my recliner. Its nice and cozy tucked away in my shop.
Thinking about putting it in a slip around Rio Vista in a month or two to do some fishing. At that time it will be about an hour drive.
Then around May I'm thinking about getting a slip at Village West in Stockton. Then it will be a 15 min drive after work.

LOL My boat ---- well, it is my son' boat now ---- is over 3000 miles away! But I kept my boat close to where I loved to boat. The car travels faster then the boat does. I sure hated that drive from Sunnyvale to Bethel Island on a Friday afternoon! The traffic was horrendous. But once I arrived at the boat, I was in a different world. It is all about what works best for each boater.

It's an hour and 15 minutes. Thought about going closer to the Bay and then realized I'd go even less. Rather be closer to the boat.

From my house in Clayton to Oxbow Marina is about 45 minutes door to door. Of course I get the pleasure of the Antioch Bridge toll. I used to keep another boat in the Antioch Marina which is much closer. The problem is, I like to boat in the central delta so makes more sense to have the 45 minute drive then the LONG boat trip there. Still, the 45 minute drive is a drag. Have been threatening to move to Oxbow. One of these days .....

We just moved our boat from Bethel Island to Discovery Bay Marina. BI was about a 48 mile drive and DB is now 38 miles or so. We are putting our house in San Ramon on the market with the plan to move to Discovery Bay. We then may keep the boat on our own dock. The majority of our boating is done in the delta. We do take the boat down once or twice a year to the bay. Usually for our club's down bay cruise or Kboom.

You'll like it there. Lots of houses for sale at a reasonable price too.

We looked at Discovery Bay when we moved back up to the area. We decided we like the "escape" and the community of going to a marina as opposed to having our boat in our back yard.

What are those places in Oxbow going for now? I always thought it was cool.

just moved my boat from Disc Bay to SF (Pier 39). Now I am 25 minutes away and have a "room" in the city for fun

Drive about an hour depending on traffic and weather.
Then 5 minutes to the no wake buoy.

It's a 48 to 52 minute drive. But then it's all state highway and county road driving so I always enjoy the trip.

My drive is 62 miles/1:10 without traffic. If I kept the boat closer to home, I'd be further from the fishing and cruising grounds. I'd take the longer car ride and shorter boat trip if you like the marina and can tolerate the drive.

11 more miles doesn't sound like much farther. How much longer does it take to drive?

Going through Bezerkly on 80 can take an hour by itself on a Friday afternoon.

We're about an hour and a quarter from our boat, but that puts the boat much closer to the central Delta where we like to boat. We typically also go down to the Bay for a month or two in the fall.

I live in Sac but keep my boat in Richmond at Marina Bay Yacht Harbor. We've been there about 12 years now. On a good day it's about an hour and 15 minutes away and an easy drive. Richmond is nice and it's a short sail out the breakwater to the bay. I used to keep the boat in Berkeley, but the traffic just got real bad the closer you get to the bay bridge. Since it's a sailboat, we are mostly bay sailors, but we hit the delta once a year or so.

A sail boat, now that makes more sense to me for having on the bay. Is that good Italian restaurant still there at Marina Bay?
