How long before you replace an engine around here?

I know it depends on a lot of factors but a friend of mine is looking for his first boat. My advice to him was go used but newer so you dont have many problems which may put an early end to his boating expierence. He looked at a few 2000-2001 models and couldnt get the size he wanted in the price range, he is now looking at 90-95 year boats and I'm just concerned they will need need engines in the very near future. All would be I/O raw water cooled from the island.
 
assuming salt water, 10 to 15 year old RWC engines are indeed going to need replacement soon; this should be taken into account in the offered price.

or find one where the engines recently replaced...
 
It's hard to say for sure. I have a 1982 FWC boat with original motors and they run fine. But in general, Pascal's estimates are usually the norm.
 
I would budget new engines into the what he plans to spend with raw water cooled gas engines of that age. It's possible they'll be fine for several more years but I wouldn't count on it. On my dad's old boat we had a RWC I/O and it lasted 15 years but probably should have been replaced before then.
 
I would also be concerned about the outdrives, I don't have much experience with them so maybe others could chime in on that.
I also think once your friend narrows down some choices, you should ask this question again. Reason being, some older boats may have other issuses that need to be looked at (for one, fuel tanks)
