Hi All,
When I first took my two boys out we went fishing for salmon on downriggers and the kids were dying. They brought things to keep them busy but thats not a good fishing trip for them.
Next time I just went in the lake and we fished for perch. In Lake Washington there are schools of thousands so you just find the right area and drop down the line with pretty much anything on it and bam! Fish on. No limits. No license. No worries of losing good gear. Just plain old catching fish fun! We had "smallest", "ugliest", "largest", "hardest fight" contests all day. Bottom line is it was a great day and my kids definately want to go again and even asked if they could bring some friends.
To me that's how you get kids interested in anything. The hard lessons in fishing have to come later (such as sitting all day without catching anything in the pouring rain) but like in coaching young soccer or baseball the first part has to be fun or they wont want to come back.
By the way, my boys are 5 and 7 just for reference.
Just my $.02.
<cheers> Happy New Year
