Since our topics need to be somewhat boating related, I am adding a twist to my current dilemma. How to support boating on unemployment? Thank god I invested well and my company gave me a decent package. So I am staying in boating and my yacht club for the upcoming year. But after that I may need to build a floating skid with a sail and store it at the grave yard cove at the end of Lindenhurst cut. Just kidding, I hope.
I posted my below story on the NBR “unemployment stinks !!!, but many of my friends and fellow boaters may not go to that forum. So my story goes like this:
I had worked for a major radio network, Westwood One Radio Networks for over 19 years as a VP / Director of Information Systems reporting to the CIO / CFO. Actually my work history with the company was a product of several mergers and takeovers. I had survived all them because the management that took over saw the value in my past knowledge, skills and loyalty.
In the past couple of years the radio network industry began to decline, advertisers are not putting the same $'s into Radio as they did in the past. So WWO management began to lay off staff and some good talented people just left on their own. At this point management changed and not for the better. A couple of new hotshots came into power and decided to do a major RIF (reduction in force) without really understanding the ramifications, just bottom line #'s to be met. First the bums had me layoff a few of my team. I went home that night sick to my stomach.
A few weeks later, I went on a 10 day boating vacation and when I returned, I got the ax two days later along with another 100 or so. It hit me hard and unexpected as I had some very important projects in the works. They put the CIO in charge of the day to day management with no hands on at my level. My remaining staff still reports to me by phone on the stupidity that is going on and how things are in turmoil.
My wife worked for Infinity Broadcasting / CBS Radio and similar crap was taking place, so she saw the writing on the wall and starting looking. Within a few weeks got a great job as a Finance Controller for a major law firm on LI.
Today is now the first Monday in December and the job market for my level is slow. I am looking at various opportunities but may have to wait until after the Holidays. The first couple of months were not too bad while it was still warm, but now it's getting to me. I have never been out of work during my 30+ years on the job force. And to be blown out by new management that barely knew what I did for the company really hurt.
With the shorter colder days coming on, things tend not to seem so bright. But
I do have my resume on dozens of popular job search web sites, also have dozens or more recruiters working with me and have had a couple of interviews. So I hope there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Needed to vent a bit on a boating related forum as this could really cramp by boating style !!!
