Hi everyone, I live in Bricktown, NJ and I am going to make a week long trip up the Hudson this summer and would like all the info you can give me regarding this trip. There will be 3-5 boats all 37' and up if that helps.
Last year we did NYC, LI sound to Block Island and are looking for a change. Thanks Steve McGuire

Steve;

Just a few of the many marinas to check out would include Haverstaw Marina, Roundout Marina as well as Catskill Marina. All are clean and very transient friendly. West Point is a great destination, and you can always find a few of us anchored over at the Croton anchorage. Newburg offers great places to dock and dine, and the list goes on and on.

Offer up as many details as you can, and I'm sure you'll get a lot of feed back from the group at HRCC. Keep the questions coming and you'll be overwhelemed by the number of responses.

P.S. Les; We're doing are part towards promoting the HRCC forum. ;)

Exactly! Give us an idea of what you want to see/do and where you think your final destination would be. Are you doing any of the locks? Or will you be turning around in Troy and coming south???

Pete,
Rob would be so proud of you...How ever you forgot the official welcome to HRCC....
Steve as Pete and Pete said. There are quite a few great places and scenes on the River to see. What time of the season are you planning on and do yo want to spend the time cruising, rafting or just visiting.
The good news is Haverstraw Marina will have there new restaurant open this year and there are quite a few good places a short taxi ride or shuttle to eat. Nor a lot of site seeing but a nice marina with some really great people.
Croton is a great raftup area and you would probably meet a few HRCC members over there. Also a good swimming area.
You can taxi from Haverstraw to west point or bear mountain state park.
West point is on the river but they don't allow dockage since 911..I believe some people anchor and dingy, perhaps someone else can confirm that.
Both Catskill and roundout are great marinas and again have some great boaters and HRCC members. All the areas I mentioned have web sites (except Croton beach) and can be googled. I would post them but I am running late for work and dont have the time to track them down...

Again welcome to the HRCC and Im sure you will get all the information you will need to make your trip up the Hudson enjoyable.

You mean there are places to actually go with your boat on the Hudson [:-mischievous] ???

Question on a trip like that. When you go on cruises with other boats, stoping at multiple ports. Do you all travel together at the same speed or do you just specify the next spot and everyone meets up at a particular time? Just wondering if everyone has to slow down to the speed of the slowest boat.

Typically what we do is pair off the boats by cruising speed, so the boats that have similar speeds would travel together.

IMHO, asking a boat to slow down to go 'your' speed is selfish. If my boat cruises at an optimal speed or optimal ride, then it would suck for me to slow down and have a crappy ride or loose fuel economy.

There are situations where you would go the same speed to help a boat or boats that are cruising with you, fog, breakdown where you might get stuck and need help, etc....

I'm done with the notion that I have to slow down or hand hold for others, I'd rather cruise with boats my speed, if not, we can always meet up at the dock or anchorage later.

To me, a knot or two is not a big deal. On the flip side, I don't want to run harder than normal just to keep up.

It's something we agree on before hand.

Finally, a new member, hopefully Coach HOGAN will not be fired.

Welcome Steve. Our favorite destination on the river is Roundout Creek and Catskill Marina.

I agree with Robyns Nest. My boat is slower than an express cruiser. I would not want to hold everyone else up. I would also only want to travel at the optimal cruising spped and not have to adjust and use mroe fuel. I just didn;t know what the proper etiquette was.

We pair up as well where applicable.

If a slower boat is traveling with us we usually try and get that boat to leave before us so we can catch up.

It works sometimes and sometimes it is what it is.

Ok, I'll go on a limb. Traveling with boats that travel at different speeds is not the best. We wound up being run over by someone who traveled faster and decided to catch up. It ruined the vacation and made a mess of a lot of relationships.
You are much better off cruising with boats at the same speed. If they cannot keep up or you cannot, then I say you are better off just going on your own and meeting up with everyone at the destination. If the slow boats are worried about getting there, then make arrangements.
But try to travel with boats that cruise at the same speed. It might be fun watching and playing the tortise and the hare routine but after a awhile on a long ride, it takes a toll. If you are on lead and they decide to catch up, you are obliged (to yourself) to keep an eye out.

"Do you all travel together at the same speed or do you just specify the next spot and everyone meets up at a particular time?"

In my old boat we used to just go on ahead by an hour or so, and our companions would catch up to us at some point, usually beating us to our destination by a bit, but at least we arrived at close to the same time. My current boat is fast enough to keep up with my buddies, or at least require a much shorter head start...

Me, I just crawl along...Some wait for me, some just run away...In the end we all end up at the same place and have a drink afterwards...
We did have a trip several years ago for the 1st HRCC fall cruise I attended where my son came with his little gofast. He followed us home till we approached the newburg bridge. Once he knew where he was, he took off and let us. Five minutes later my wife is driving and bang, she hits a submerged log. Destoyed the prop. Know down to 1 engine, about 3-5 mph run and 45 degree water (did I mention this was october) and seeing him running away from me was not a very nice feeling knowing the only way I was going to get home was in the water I go....

Did you have a spare prop Butch?

What would your son have done, gone in the water for you? I thought you made Caryl do all the easy stuff anyway?

Gee Butch yer gettin soft. While I was reading this I thought for sure you did the right thing and called him on a cell phone so he could come back and get you so you could let Caryl drive the boat back. This way you could be waiting for her at the dock with a coldie ;).

Well yes I did have a prop, I did try to call him on the phone as well as the radio. Thru hull exhaust wide open you hear nothing. (or he ignored me)Yes he would have gone in the water if he knew what was good for him...Now as far as Caryl goes, she was not feeling well and I did not want her in the cold water. She did have to go to work while I finished my vacation.

See I do have a heart after all.....

Oh to make sure all realize, Yes I did go all the way in the water and replaced the prop. Even after changing into dry cloths I still had to have several shots on the way home to warm me up...

Glad you had a capable driver! We did a frostbite cruise with the gang one year and I was the only one up on the bridge coming back from Hop-O-Nose to Kgn. Everyone else was in the cockpit or cabin with the reverse cycle going. An enclosure would have helped!
I think I pounded a few when we got back.

We were extremely lucky that year. One of those warm spells came so we had a good weekend. If I remember right, we cleaned the snow off the boat the following weekend....
