I just moved to the New York area and looking for any type of boat or yacht club. Does anyone know of anything???

New York area is a pretty big place. Any idea where you are looking to end up?

There are quite a few, give us more info, what amenities are you looking for? In what area are you looking?

I am located in NYC so preferably something located along the hudson river in Manhattan or Jersey city which i think is located directly across the river.

On the Jersey side from south to north:
Liberty Landing (Jersey City)
Liberty Harbor (Jersey City)
Newport Yacht Club (Jersey City. Where I am)
Hoboken North (Can't remember the name of the marina)
Lincoln Harbor (Weehawken)
Port Imperial (Weehawken)
Englewood Boat Basin
Alpine Boat Basin

On the Manhattan Side South to North
North Cove Marina
Chelsea Piers (Surfside 3)
79th St Boat Basin

Newport is a nice area, but I could not abide the rock and roll.
I am in Lincoln Harbor now and like the lack of rock and roll better, but the area is less nice than Newport.

Can not comment on any others.

When you say club, are you looking for something with ammenities (pool, restaurant, social calendar), are you looking for a working club (to save money) or are you simply looking for a place to dock your boat?

Thanks MichaelNJ that list was great. I did have a chance to stop by the 79th st. Boat Basin and it was not really what i was looking for it seemed to be filled with all old house boats and the marina looked run down. I also took a walk down to Chelsea Piers which was really nice. They had a lot of nice boats and its right next to the golf club which was cool - watching people hit golf balls is my "raison d'etre". Also has anyone ever done a boat or yacht share???

WALSHIE - I'm looking for a club that has a selection of boats i could take out and use since i had to sell my boat when i moved to NY not so much a pool or stuff like. Do you know of anything like that???

Liberty Landing is the biggest marina on the Jersey side with the calmest water.

Huge Liberty State Park to enjoy, many events during the summer, fireworks (almost weekly this past month) nice restaraunt, fuel dock, ice delivery, pump out boat that actually works and comes to your boat when called, dock hands always available to assist your coming and goings.....

Geezzzzz, Almost sounds Like Penny Bridge Marina....We have most of that one way or another....

The manhattan sailing school located at the WFC does stuff like that. I know a couple of members and apparently you have access to sail boats to cruise the harbor. Also, Croton Sailing School where I live (Croton on Hudson, NY) can be found on the internet. I believe they have a program like you described for sail boats.

I seem to recall Liberty Landing has some sort of power boat sharing program?

Good thing you chose the HRCC to ask questions. Don't go over to the LICC, they'll probably ask you to post some pictures of yourself then fight over who gets to take you for a ride...they're a shady group.

Has anyone heard of a yacht club called LL Yacht Club??? I was just doing some searching and googling online and came across this yacht club in Chelsea Piers...i need some fellow boaters advice. help :-)

WALSHIE - haha and its a good thing i didnt go to the LICC cause god knows all i need is a bunch of shady guys asking me to go on boat rides [:-hspin]

We are not shady, no not us…… we are a big loving family of boaters and some LICC’ers have even rubbed rails with our northern counter parts on raft-ups. So… beware of the HR wolf in sheep’s boat attire… ;)

You are very welcome to come east and check out the www.liyc.com , you do need your own boat, but can also join without a boat for many other types of memberships.

I believe it's called 'Typhoon boat club' or something similar, they have several powerboats available, mostly fishing boats if I remember correctly, up to 31' or so. Actually I just checked and there's a link to it on the Liberty Landing website but there's nothing there, so not sure if that means they are no longer in operation. http://www.libertylandingmarina.com/links/index.php

I've met people in the Manhattan Sailing school also. If you see sailboats racing near the Statue of Liberty in the evening that's them. They also have a clubhouse moored out in the harbor to watch the sailing if you're not out yourself that day, there's a launch that leaves from North Cove marina. Haven't heard of LL yacht club.

Thanks JohnC. I checked out Liberty Landing Marina and you were right they mostly did have sailboats. The powerboats that they did have werent all that new and they were kind of small.

However, since Lonesome Losers Yacht Club is on the water I had a chance to walk down there and look at their stuff and it was so nice. It was right next to the golf driving range which was really cool - there is nothing I find more interesting than watching people hit golf balls. I sat there for about 10 min. and watched people hit golf balls haha. I love golf balls. In fact, golf balls are my life

They had this one 42' yacht that was beatiful. They guy told me that they offer memberships which I wasnt really familiar with but he said that you pay an exhorbitant monthly fee for a year and have access to all of their boats - you don't get to use them, you just have "access" to them! Anyways, being the golf ball lover that I am, I thought it was a really cool idea - especially because you can watch people hit golf balls. Do you know any other yacht clubs that offer memberships or boat shares???

Chelsea Piers has been a subsidiary of Surfside 3 which has become MarineMax, but wasn't it primarily a sales office and marina? For convenience to NYC it is the best, for overnight stays it is the worst - talk about ying & yang! For info on boat shares you may want to check out Power & Motoryacht magazine, they have multiple pages in the back of each issue devoted to this kind of boating experience.

PS: Pessimist that I am, anyone suspect we are getting played by this "nycyachtgirl?" Hopefully not, you guys have been really helpful in your responses, sure wouldn't want you to be labeled "shady!!" But it will make for interesting conversation at the raft-up....do we dare mention the raft-up is walking distance from the train station?!! :)
