Hudson River Vacation Suggestions?

I am thinking about taking a run from Oceanside, South shore of Long Island, up the Hudson 2nd week of July. I don't think I want to go much past Haverstraw (trying to keep with fuel/budget limits).

The Admiral and I like visiting new places. Where would be good stops, anchorages, swimming, etc?

How long are you planning to be on the river?

Not much until you get to Haverstraw. The marina there is good for transients, however, there is not much around. Not a place to stay for more than a night or two

You could stop at Tarrytown, where you can walk to town, but the marina is basic.

Croton is a good anchorage, excellent holding, with swimming, unless the wind is out of the N or NW, in which case it can be pretty snotty.
 
Tarrytown Marina would be a great stopover.... We enjoyed it last fall on our way to Kingston.

We did liberty landing first night, then RoundOut in Kingston, then, Havastraw, nice trip.

DId just this a couple weekends ago.

I have boated on both, so it is fun.

I personally like to anchor out, and do so just north of the GWB a lot. There is a pretty park there and it is far enough outside the traffic lanes that you usually don't get much wake.

Before the Tappan Zee bridge, there is a cute little town named Piermont. Cute shops, hippie kind of vibe. Water is very shallow, though.

If I can make a suggestion, I think a better trip is to run outside, go to the south tip of manhattan, go up maybe to the 40s, on either side, then go down to Sandy Hook, NJ. From there you can head in to the Navasink river which is very pretty.
