Hurrican Irene Headed Our Way!

and a good insurance policy! I am calling my broker now!

$50 bucks to haul my little center console. AND Im having the marina pick up my trailer in Amityville, bring the trailer to seaford to haul it..Best $50bucks I am going to spend. Plus, it keeps me at work!!!

The searay, if it gets damaged it gets damaged. Its not a new boat, though its in great shape. Ive put 6 hours on that boat this season..

Called my broker! Policy is all set. Fully covered. Don't have to haul but covered for that if I want.
They recommended my size boat stay in water. They are in Florida and said they have seen more damage done to boats that haul than boats that are secured well and float!

add lines.
secure canvas and personal stuff.
get out of dodge!

My coverage will cover boat for what it is worth!

Would be a interesting stat to see how many people get totalled in a storm, get the check from insurance and then don't get back into boating. I was just thinking what I would do. Though I love my boat, I have often though about going back to a trailer boat. Would be a tough call! We definately don't run the boat as much as we used to but we do sleep on it every weekend. Perhaps buy a older boat to sleep on and small boat to zip around on!

Interesting if you zoom in on that is show's no storm surge at all in Great South Bay.
That would be great if that was true!
What is good about our bay is in order for the surge to get to us I assume it would have to wipe out barrier beach first.
I doubt alot of water can come in the few inlets that fast and fill the bay!
Our bay usually surges from storm drain runoff.

Anyone here live on the water during past hurricanes? Do we get a large surge?

I live on the water and am just 4 houses down from where i grew up. have almost 40yrs worth of memory. we do see a surge. no different than with strong noreasters. you can see the tide rising before your eyes. i just pick a spot on the bulkhead a few inches above the water. keep glancing back at it and you see the difference every couple minutes.

Mother nature has been trying to put an inlet in by Gilgo for sometime. It will be interesting to see what barrier beaches look like come monday morning.

I thought about hauling the boat but so far I've decided against it. I would rather take my chances than to go through the trouble of hauling it and it getting damaged by wind while up on blocks anyway.
I plan to play it by ear and possibly go down and take the canvass off either tomorrow night or sometime Saturday. I'm still hoping to take the boat out for an early dinner somewhere on the water tomorrow night if schedules and weather permit.
The kids and I had a nice afternoon cruise yesterday. It was blowing a bit and the bay was a little snotty but it was still real nice out there.
The longer forecast calls for some pretty nice weather next week and I hope to be able to take advantage of it. Having the boat hauled might screw things up.
I'm more worried about having to go in to Brooklyn for some work I need to get done Saturday night. It's a fairly easy job, but I don't feel like getting soaked and driving back and forth in the middle of the night in heavy rains.

WALT,
IF i was in Merrick. I would be on land !

Just heard on the radio MANDATORY evacuation of Fire Island Tomorrow .

Havent we seen this before? All this hype and NOTHING. Itll probably be 90degrees and sunny over the weekend

Walter

I think so much depends on your slip and where on land you will be

How tall are the pilings?
Will the possible tidal surge be above the pilings?
Are the pilings new? Tying off to the top gives you the greatest rage but is the weakest point. Are they’re enough of them?

There’s suppose to be a full moon Sunday during 2 high tides

Who’s near you and if they break loose will it screw you?

On land-
Will the tidal surge float you off the stands?
Will the winds blow you off the stand – or the guy next to you?
Any trees or other bad stuff to wack the boat?

I'm docked broadside on a fixed dock. No way to keep me off the dock except fenders. I'm leaning towards a haul out.

Spoke to my insurance company and the cover 50 % of the haul out cost. Much better option then my deductable during a hurricane.

I am staying in. i have commitments at work i cant get out of , so i dont think i will have time to haul. My plan is to move the boat out into the canal about 6 feet or so and tie lines off across the canal. take down the canvas and watch it all play out.

I am staying in. Going to go and double up the lines. Was wondering should I leave the canvas up or take it down> I have a self bailing cockpit so not sure what is preferred. I think we can expect some major power outages for Sunday. Good luck to everyone.

Either way this plays out guys its only a boat. ( DID I JUST SAY THAT ?? ) Everyone needs to be smart and be safe. Property no matter how much we love it can be replaced.

Lets hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

AGAIN BE SAFE

That really sums it all up. Do what you can, go home and stay safe and dry, check the boat when it's all over and deal with it then if you have to.

Your absolutely right Rob. I once literally had to slap a neighbor who was freaking out cause water was entering his first story and floor was getting wet. At the end of the day he replaced sheetrock, some wires and sanded his floors. I had to remind him that his family was safe, and the house was insured.

The question is, "to haul or not to haul"

I lean towards staying in and taking my chances. If we do get crazy winds I'd be more afraid of the damage they could do to the boat from flying debris or toppling over off of the blocks. If I were hauling anywhere near a canal I'd be concerned with flood tides floating it off of blocks.
If you can haul it and transport it to higher ground somwhere it might be worth it. I thought about getting a boat hauler to transport mine up to my friends shop in Farmingdale, but decided against it.
I'm willing to take my chances in the canal. It's a boat and will float. If anything bad happens then I'll deal with the insurance company. That's what I pay them for.
If nothing bad happens, then I'm in the water and ready to go when the weather gets nice on Monday.
