Hurricane Sandy

I tried to get to Lighthouse Marina during the noon tide. Could not even get close, flooding closed Meetinghouse Creek Road and Peconic Bay Blvd.

I tried to get down East Riviera, and the West Riviera at about 2:00 PM to check on my boat. I wasn't able to get closer than several blocks north of the bay on either side. It was hard to tell, but judging by what I could see of my shed down there it looked to be under about 3 feet of water two blocks north of the bay. I thought there was a chance that 3 1/2 hours after high tide I could have gotten further, but no such luck.
Low tide is at about 5:30 down ther, but I don't know how much closer I'd be able to get at that time and that's when the winds are supposed to go crazy so I'm not sure if I am going to make another attempt.
Glad I didn't have my boat hauled and blocked up. I'd be worried about it either floating or blowing off the blocks.
Lights have already flickered here a few times, so I'm guessing we're about to lose them.
Times like this I wish I still lived in Queens with the underground power system. Maybe the local government should try to find a way for the feds to fund a project to bury the power lines on Long Island. It's long overdue, and would create lots of jobs for a few years.

Power out!
I am out!
No genny here, I was hoping to use the boat, but that is out!
Oh well, see you all on the other side of hell!

Tides already coming in and its early. We still have electric and a generator.

Good Luck all who stayed.

Power on LI must be much more reliable than here in PA. For a couple hundred dollars you can purchase a 1000 watt generator that will kept the lights on, run the fridge, run the PC/TV, charge your cell phone, etc... If you need to run a heat pump or some sort of heat, then obviously you'll need a bigger unit perferably using a transfer switch for those circuits.

Tides station at the battery, Bergen and kings point are showing over 12' above MLW! And kings Point high tide isn't till 11:27pm

Lesson leaened two years in a row. 3 times a charm. The not so funny thing is, if this was for the boat, it would be a no brainer. Next black out we will have a generator. Especially since I probably no longer have a boat if the tide is up 8 feet or more!

I installed a house generator after the blackout in 2003. I was down at tha marina today., could not get in because they locked the gate. Flooding was worse I ever saw.

Well this was fun. 18" in the downstairs, 2.5 ft in the garage, my deck is floating, cars were sort of bobbing, all wires that matter broke or ripped out of the side of the house. It's going back down though, down 8" or so now. I think the boats are good but can't see one behind a tree and I'm not wading in the water any more. All is good on the second floor though, have candlelight and radio and may as well use up some of the ice on beverages. FU Sandy.

BTW Irene never got within a foot of flooding us so this had to be 3 ft higher than Irene. Unreal.

I'm watching a boat that was on a trailer in the front yard across the street and it's jus sort of bobbing stuck between two houses now.

Ron,
If you see a Silverton 45c, floating by, that's my boat :)

Walter, if I do I'm claiming salvage and living on there for a while. Bet your genny works, unlike my Coleman which is waiting on ordered parts.

Hope you left more beverages on board.

Men, do you know how high above normal high tide the water actually got in the anchorage and Ss3? Like Irene which was probably less than 4' or a lot higher?

I can tell you this was 3' higher than Irene at least. From normal high tide is hard to gauge since the house is not near the dock. 5.5 maybe? If it's down tomorrow and I have a debris line on my dock poles I could tell you.

I plan to head over in am. Hopefully I can get to and into the marina (electric gate). Guess I will see for myself shortly.
