Ice tastes like plastic

We recently purchased a 2004 3860 and it has the icemaker in the cockpit. While I love the convenience of an icemaker, I find the ice tastes like plastic. We have treated the water systems so I am thinking it is the unit itself? Does the whole icemaker need to be replaced or can you replace the interior components? Will that take care of it or is a plastic taste something just to be expected?

What does the water taste like on the rest of the boat? try filling up an ice tray from a faucet and freeze it and see what the ice tastes like. Might not be the ice maker. May just need to clean/treat/sterilize the icemaker

ARrrrg, Capt. Art, good booze shouldn't taste like MEK!

Sorry. No solution to the taste issue.

are you using a new garden hose to fill the tank??

Built-in icemakers have plastic valves and plastic tubing inside them, to deliver the water to the ice mold, where it is frozen.

Assuming that the water itself tastes OK, I'm guessing that the icemaker wasn't used very much by the previous owner, and still has the "new car" taste in it. With more usage, that taste should gradually go away.

I've serious doubts that buying a new machine will change the situation at all, and may even make it worse.

Thanks everyone. We are using a new drinking water quality hose via city water so no tank. I don't think it is the hose because the water from the tap tastes fine. Although I guess I should check a tap other than the galley because we put a Brita filter on that and the water tastes great. So good that I am thinking of not needing to keep stocking up on bottled water. Before the Brita, I did taste once or twice and did not notice any plastic taste. So I am thinking that maybe it is as Vic suggests and just was not used much by the previous owner. I'll keep running it and see if it gets better. Thanks.

One other thought....we did treat the water systems via the bleaching method and ran a few batches of ice with the clorinated water but nothing beyond that to treat/sanitize the icemaker......was there something else we should do?

A water maker does not flow alot of water. Flush the water line. Make lots of ice and throw it away till you get to the good water. Also wipe out the cube holder. sometimes stuff sticks to the inside, Rinse and flush. Before you connect the hose to the boat turn it on and flush it out. There may not be much use on your dock and the water just sits there. The last dock I was on I had to flow water for fifteen minites to get the bad tast out.

Just freeze some Vodka in there and you wont need to clean out the water at all!

You probably have the wrong type of hose connecting the ice maker to the water source. Had the same problem with a new refrigerator. They probably didn't use a dringking water grade hose. GE guy came out and recognized the problem right away changed the hose and no problem.
