Hey all!!

It's been about 8 years since I was on the water.

I'm picking up a 28' bayliner this week. Guess I'll need to change my username lol

Couple questions:

This forum seems a bit slower than I remember, do you all have a Facebook group or something?

The bayliner does not have a GPS, are there any good iPad apps that I could use as a GPS?

THANKS!!
Danny

Welcome Back.
I’m a huge iPad fan. Mine has unlimited cellular data. I’m on it now. It’s always with me on the boat. I stream Sirius XM through it via Bluetooth to the boat stereo, use it as a hotspot to stream Netflix and Prime Video. I use an Apple connector to the boat tv to watch Fios TV, read the newspaper on it, and I have the manuals for just about everything on the boat saved as pdf’s to iPad.
I’ve got the Navionics App on it too.
That’s just some of the boating related uses, I depend on the thing for all kinds of stuff off the boat too.
But, as big a fan as I am of it, I would not use it in place of a real marine chartplotter.
The screen is extremely hard to see in glare, the sun will overheat it, and it doesn’t like to get splashed.
If you shop around, or wait for a special from places like BOE, you can probably get a great deal on a good GPS/Chartplotter/MFD. Especially if you get a previous year model. Get one with the built in sounder, add a transducer, and you’ll have a depthfinder too.

If your IPad does not have cellular, get a dual GPS puck, about 100 bucks.

I too am a fan of using IPad, I use the Navionics app.

The 28 Bayliner was good to me but I lost it in Sandy, perfect for inland cruising. With that in mind, a basic iPad will work...you are not running to the canyons. Is it the one over here on Guy Lombardo?

Nope, I'm at whaleneck in merrick. The boat was previously there as well. Have, T had a chance to go for a run and the weather isn't getting any better for the next few days :(

Welcome back. I use Navionics as well. I actually use it more than my chartplotter/gps. I find it more accurate.

I used IPAD to navigations with Navionics.
Buy a ipad with 4g to get the satellite receiver built in, no contract needed.
I only use the rayjunk as a backup and for radar.
Very accurate.
No issue reading it in sun. I use one of those super sucker mounts which works great.
