A little late but there was an interesting article on the front page of Saturday's NY Times(6/11) about the increase of security checks on the Hudson River. You may be able to find it on the web. Definately two strong sided opinions. Boaters claiming harrassment vs. law enforcement claiming needs due to terrorist threats.

Yea, if I was a marine cop I would want to justify my job with claims of protection against "terrorist threats" too! ;)

Soooooo, people who get stopped multiple times in the same day? I guess the cops have to make sure they didn't stash their rocket launchers & dirty bombs on land somewhere & go back to retrieve them after the first cop stop. lol

Honey, I think it's well past time for PROFILING !

The Harassment on the river is out of control. There must be a dozen agencies who don't talk to each other - so you can be stopped for a "safety check" several times a day. There should be a sticker, like the USCGA gives out, that protects you from these unwarranted stops.

And they will be ignored like the CG Aux stickers. Why is it a suit can't be filed naming all of the agencies that are participating in this?

We should all fly a flag of inspection. Add one stripe for each boarding/inspection you endure. Would be fun to see how many flags are flown and how many stripes are on the flags.

I have been saying for a long time they should give us a sticker and honor it. I have had the coast guard tell us during a boarding that they would be in an area all weekend and we could be boarded again even though we had the paperwork from the current boarding. That is nothing but harrasment. Unless I became a terrorist after the 1st boarding that is! What really gets me is boarding a raftup that is quite clearly a group of people out for a long weekend. If I remember right they need a warrant to enter my house and my boat is my house on the weekend.

Yes with 9-11 as well as other terrorist events we do need to be a wiser and safer but whats happening to us boaters is getting out of hand. Every time I go out I feel like I am given up my rights as an american that I thought I fought for!

The flags would most likely become targets by some of the agencies.

I've only had the opportunity to talk to the LE group that operate out of Patsy's and I will say they are a decent group IMO.

The Rockland Sheriff is the most professional group on the river. They are not obsessed with boarding for the sake of running up numbers, and they are responsive when needed. The other units should take a lesson from them!

Thats the LE group I'm talking about Mike. I couldn't remember the department name. (Chemo brain is a bitch!)

iT'S REALLY NO DIFFERENT THAT THE tsa FEELING UP LITTLE KIDS AND OLD FOLKS AT THE AIRPORT

It's really no different than th eTSA feeling up little kids or old folks at the airports.

When was the last time a little kid or old white male/female committed a terrorist act?

Again, what we need is PROFILING !
