Yes, Zach's Bay was an inlet. As a matter of fact, all of Jones Beach was under water at high tide. Back in the 1920's Robert Moses, build up the barrier beach by over 12' by dredging sand from the inside and the outside to create Jones Beach State Park. Prior to the creation of the Park most of the channels on the north side of the beach were not navigable because they were very shallow.

Sounds that way. Never heard of it before Dave posted the map and I started digging for more info. I love that kind of stuff :)
