Irene Speeding Toward East Coast

RYB will make it just fine. Water levels are dropping rapidly. The docks look ugly but most things held up. Lots of repairs to be made but not to the boats.

I'll be back up late night or early tomorrow morning to get my boat out of there. What looked to be a good choice at the time turned out to be ugly but no damage.

My heart is broken over what has happened to Catskill Marina. This was positively our favorite transient location. Our thought go out to Delores and Jack. We have not been there in 5 years, yet we remain on their Christmas card list every year. Truely class people.

RYB is still ok but groaning. Docks were quite noisey but holding.

Indeed Catskill is gone. River view for all intents and purposes is as well. Hop-O-Nose is banged up really bad. It has a boat jammed in the travel lift and is bent. They must have triede a late haul. Saugerties looks worn but much like the Rondout marinas.

Riverview actually did surprisingly well except for the docks. Hop O Nose is totaled. Virtually every boat on the hard floated. There is a shrink wrapped boat in the creek. Many feet of water in Creekside restaurant.

Many of the boats that came loose from Catskill Marina found and anchored. The fifty footer tour loose but is safe.

I plan on taking my boat from the Hideaway Marina in Kingston back to NYC on Wed morning. How is the flotsam in the river? I would suspect that there is a lot of junk in the Hudson.

If you take it slow and keep a sharp look out you will probably be ok, but there are wide debris lines in the river and tributaries now. The likelyhood of banging a prop is high especially if your in a planing hull and expect to make time.

So what details, eye witness accounts are there on what happened in Catskill? How many boats were involved and what's become of them? So there were two marinas involved?

Saw a report that a barge got loose on the Mohawk River and required closure of the Northway. Gate for Lock 11 in Amsterdam also trashed. The Mohawk has flooded many communities. Northern NY State really hit hard but thankfully there have been few reported deaths.

Well, we did very well at CYC. No major damage to report.
Here is a pic:

Thats a hilarious picture, Chris! Yacht Club Island....

Sad to hear about Catskill, they've gotten smashed several times in recent years. That creek is deadly when it gets bad, I think its cause of that big rock across from the marina where it literally forces all the water towards their docks...

The Rondout is a mess, but largely intact. We had some docks bent over at 340 Abeel Street (across from Certified) but I think the boats will make it unscathed. Just the sheer force of the water - from bow to stern on my boat I'll bet the current increased 5 knots. Lou's II and Rondout Bay (in Eddyville) seem to have fared the worst, the water was up over the roadway on Route 213 and some cars had been submerged. My FB page has some more pictures...

As for the Mohawk, apparently a big barge broke free and briefly threatened the I-87 spans and Route 9 bridges in Crescent (near Clifton Park/Halfmoon) but its under control now. Further west some trailer or something took out the lock gates that were mentioned earlier by another RO. The damage is pretty bad in many places up here, the volume of water was just tremendous...

Briefly... All marinas on the creek suffered varying degrees of damage. The yacht club and a few others managed to hang on to some docks. All is gone but a few dock scraps from Catskill Marina and the docks in front of the townhouses are all gone including the steel supports that kept them there (Catskill Marina no longer owned those docks). Much of the protective rip rap there has collapsed. The pictures below tell the story on Sunday afternoon from about 3:00 to 4:30 while there were still some docks and boats. Not one boat remained when it was over. Many were recovered out in the river, some in reasonably good shape and were anchored out of the channel by Sea Tow and others.

Freakin' incredible! That Irene was such a bitch. Good to know though she didn't eat anyone alive up there. Thanks for providing the info since I hadn't been able to find a news account.

When i left the Anchorage yesterday at 5:30PM, the water was coming down very quickly. They were starting to pump out the restaurant basement which was a good thing since the water was headed lower... I was looking at the Rosendale measurements on hamweather and saw the creek was still at higher than normal levels (13.6') but were still waaaaay below any dangerous stage. Originally I saw flow readings of 34 Kcfm, the readings are 4.5 kcfm now. Will head up to the marina later today to tour my former deck/gazebo/grill etc...

Be careful where you eat if a place had no power, then who knows.
I am sure you will see alot of blue plate specials!

I like Armadillo which is a short cab ride up from the RYB - you could even walk it as it's just about a mile but the early part of it uphill.

If you're there now, call ahead as power outages continue in the area. They also get busy so a reservation is recommended.

Let me know what you think.

Haverstraw pulled their gas dock before the storm rolled in. Haverstraw Marina is in very good shape. I see no boat damage whatsoever.

I'll second Armadillo. We were in there last Friday and enjoyed their specials. Next Ship to Shore on Abeel. Savona's was ok but when the owner is not present it's quality slips.

Thank you for the suggestions. I've called Amardillo and others and they are all closed. They just got power back today. I'll try pick-up from frank Guido's. Thanks again.

Ugh. Definitely Savona's over that place. They also deliver pizza by the way.
