We are preparing to refiberglass the flybridge deck on a 1978 Albin trawler. After removing the teak, we cut the fiberglass skin off to allow the wet balsa core to dry over the winter. It's now time to refiberglass the deck.
The old skin is not reusable due to the number of holes and general condition of it. So our plan is to put one layer of fiberglass, then 1/8 marine plywood to provide a smooth starting point. Once this has set, we will do two layers of fiberglass to finish.
Is one brand of fiberglass better than another? I have read about the West system and it seems to receive very positive comments. However, it is as much as twice the cost of other brands. Is it really worth it or are all fiberglass products pretty much the same?
Thanks for any advice you might have -
