We need to drive our boat from Islip to Massapequa. We have charts & GPS but haven't been out in that area in years with the boat so just a little nervous! I'm not familiar with that trip so any helpful info will be appreciated. Will be doing this anytime from Thurs. afternoon up until Sunday (depends on weather, work schedule, etc.)

Barb...........with a GPS and charts....your trip should be fun and easy. Where in Islip is the boat ?
East of the R/M bridge ...heading west is mostly deep water.....just watch for the crab traps.....once you clear the bridge....head for the " treatment plant " and you will pick up your markers...starting with "R2" ( R/R marked from F/I I ).....follow the channel all the way to the Amityville cut around "R22" ( wave when you pass "R18"). Past the cut around marker "R24"....will start the (dreadfull ) 5MPH zone for the rest of your trip. Just past "R24" the channnel is marked from the J/I side ...and red will now be on your port.
Have a safe trip................

I usually take the northern east/west route from Lindenhurst to the Amityville cut in high tide. It is an easy trip, and is fairly well marked.
I also travel the route from the RM bridge to Lindenhurst and it is fairly easy as well.
The buoys do tend to be spread out a little bit all along the way though.
Just take your time and follow a bigger boat when in doubt.
It should be a pleasant trip.

Double D said it best and gave you the perfect route. My home port is Massapequa. If you time it right you can avoid the slowwwww 5mph route south of Nassau Shores into Harbor Green.
Just go past the Amity Cut at high tide, and depending on what you draft, you can cut from the floating 5mph sign just south of Nassau Shores straight to just south of the Harbor Green Beach Club. I draw 3' and easily make it through that area at high tide on plane. I can get you the exact red buoy you aim for as a soutwest marker later on if you like since I'm at work now.
Saves a lot of time if you're headed past Harbor Green in Massapequa.

In case you need fuel/service on your way home.......there's the Bayshore Marina before the R/M bridge.....west of the bridge & "R6" ( by the "treatment plant" ) you have Bergin Point fuel dock & pump out.....then at "R10" you have SS3/MM & The Anchorage fuel docks......then around "R22" across from Unqua Y/C there's a fuel dock.
If you need a drink along the way ....at "R18" head north down my canal....there's water...wine...soda....beer.....wine coolers....Jack Daniels...& Sambuca in the refrig in the garage......... help yourself.
