i have the jabsco electric conversion head in my boat. as best i can tell it has been in my boat for years. ihave owned it for 2+ years and it has treated me well however now i am experiening a couple of different issues

1. When you #2 in it the input or seawater turns brown, almost as if it is recycling the contents of the bowl. from what i read on this forum there is a gasket or o-ring that has gone bad.

2. it seems like the holding tank may be leaking back down to my head. not sure if it is a result of problem #1 above or an isolated issue. i guess it could be the joker valve.
.
my quesiton is will the service kit 37040-0000 fix both of the problems

Regarding issue 1, my pump was doing the same last year. I purchased that service kit and replaced the impeller, the sleeve, and other parts that were compatible, and still had some feedback. I notice it when pouring some blue deodorant into the bowl while flushing...the blue stuff mexed in with the raw sea water coming out the rim of the bowl. I am not in the process of converting to fresh water flush using the 37055-0092 conversion kit. I hope to eliminate some odor at the same time.

As for issue 2, if the top of your holding tank is higher than the bottom of your toilet, I imagine back-flow could be caused by a partially open joker valve. But from what I have seen of them, they are not a perfect seal anyway. Shouldn't the tank always be lower thatn the toilet?

I am sure Vic will chime in this sooner or later.

One of the things I don't like about the Jabsco 37000 series electric toilets is that they have the two pumps (intake and discharge) stacked together, with only a single seal between the two. When this seal gives way, black water comes over from the discharge pump area, to the intake pump area, and mixes the dirty water with the clean water, and recirculates it. This will give you a smelly mess, as some of the dirty water and its associated sludge, will be retained up inside the hollow top rim of the toilet bowl. The seal in question is Item #19 on the exploded parts view in the following link:

The head needs to be rebuilt, but at the very least, the seal in question should be replaced ASAP.

vic- am i wrong in thinking that 19 is not part of the service kit?

when you say rebuild what do you mean? i have no problem fixing whatever is wrong, not a matter of that, it is a matter of getting all of the right parts and doing it right the firt time.

as far as the leak back into the head from the tank, that has only really happened twice, both times i was real bow heavy (to many people on the bow of the boat for fireworks).i would have thought there would have been some kind of valve to keep that from happening.

I'm thinking the reason the waste is backing up to the toilet is that either you don't have a vented loop or the vent in it is blocked. The loop is supposed to be above the water line (or above the tank in your case) and is there to prevent fluid from siphoning back. The little rubber vent valve in it can get plugged; but it's cheap and easily replaced.

Even WITH the vented loop, the water between the toilet and the loop may drain back to the toilet.

Definitely change the seal, it is part of the rebuild kit as I did mine a while back and it was included. But even so, you can get that unwanted recirculation if anything impedes the inlet water and there is too much suction. Occasionally my inlet hose gets pinched and I see that happen, even with a fresh seal being in there. The impeller pump is going to draw in something from somewhere no matter what - if it can't get clean water, it will pull the dirty stuff. The seal is just a thin rubber ring surrounding the pump shaft so it can't fight that suction with 100% efficiency.

So, maybe also look at where you are drawing water in from and make sure there is no blockage. If you are raw water flushed, you may have a ton of growth inside the hose. Or the through hull could be clogged, something like that.

After living with one of these for a few years, I have to agree with Vic that it is not a great design.

#19 is part of the service kit, and I would suggest you get a service kit and rebuild the head. This should be done every 3-5 years as a matter of preventive maintenance. Same thing with the joker valve - it is also included in the kit and should be changed every few years as well.

The idea I was trying to convey, was that it isn't always necessary to buy the complete kit ($$$). There are times when replacing a single part will do the job.

thanks vic. --- i am one of those types that if i am going in, i am going in for EVERYTHING. so even if it only needed #19 i would buy the entire kit and change it all!

thanks for all of your help.
