Not many details yet. Last night Jerry Campbell died in the Delta boating accident. He was a great guy who I have known since before he became qualified and hired by VA. I first met Jerry and his lovely wife and daughter when they were berth neighbors of mine in my marina.

What great guy. What a lose to the community of boating! I am just speechless.

Info via email from Katie Senor:

"Jerry was bringing one of the new Vessel Assist boats from Vallejo down the straits and as he turned east at the Carquinez bridge, he ran into the sheet metal wall and apparently died instantly. It was approx. 9:45pm, very dark - no moon and he was on the phone talking to Terry when it happened. The Coast Guard arrived within 15 minutes.

Phil will post more on Facebook or send us an email on details of any upcoming services.

Very sad news to hear of our dear friend."

Note: Terry is his wife........

This is very sad news and the only account I've read about this accident. I haven't seen anything in the news about this yet.

I'm sorry for the personal loss of those who knew him, and for the loss to the boating community as well.

My thoughts and prayers go out to him, his family and his loved ones. Such a tragedy.

This is so sad. JC was a super guy and will be missed. I'm so sorry for his family, Vessel Assit, and the Delta community. May God bless them all.

I assume he hit that jetty coming out of the Napa River? It is hard to see at night sometimes. But it does paint well on the radar and there is a flashing red light at the end of it. It's tragic, but I'm sure he didn't even notice that there was an actual channel entrance as the background lights can hide the flashing green and red at the entrance.

I'm not sure if it's still open, but there was a Coast Guard station right there at the entrance at one time.

Sad, but he must have been travelling at a decent rate of speed, under very dark conditions, while talking on the phone - not a good combination. As an experienced mariner, it is surprising.

Unfortunately, Hogan, I have to agree. Who knew these waters so very well that I believe he became complacent. He must have been happy just before the accident though. He was doing a job he loved and talking to the woman he loved so very much.

Liz,

Thanks for posting news of this. I haven't seen anything on the mainstream media. What a loss. My thoughts and prayers go out to all who knew him and his family. Jerry's loss serves as a reminder for all of us mariners, especially those less experienced like me, of the hazards of the delta.

Thanks to Katie Senor for emailing this to me:

Boat rescuer killed in weekend Delta accident

BETHEL ISLAND — A man whose job was rescuing stranded Delta boaters died over the weekend after his vessel collided with a sea wall near the Carquinez Bridge, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Jerry Campbell, 59, of Bethel Island, was heading home about 9:30 p.m. Friday in a 26-foot salvaging vessel dubbed "Old River" when it collided with the break wall on Mare Island in the Mare Island Strait, said Petty Officer Erik Swanson.

The Coast Guard's Vallejo station got a call about the collision within 15 minutes, boarded a boat and found Campbell badly injured without a pulse, Swanson said. He was taken to a Vallejo hospital, where he died.

The cause of the vessel crash remains under investigation. Swanson said boating conditions were calm, with winds of 10 knots, visibility for five nautical miles and calm seas.

Campbell worked for the Delta branch of Vessel Assist, a service similar to that of an auto club, and had towed both a stranded-client boat and a Vessel Assist boat initially sent out for the rescue but which had lost power.

Dave Delano, president of Yachting Specialties and Campbell's employer, said Campbell was on the phone with Terry, his wife of more than 25 years, when the collision occurred. Terry Campbell did not hear any signs of trouble until the moment of impact, when she heard her husband's phone drop to the floor, Delano said.

Terry Campbell kept the phone line open, and listened as the Coast Guard boarded the boat and announced that her husband did not have a pulse, Delano said.

Delano described Campbell, an Air Force retiree who worked for his firm for about six years, as a consummate professional who would answer tow calls day and night.

"He was a great guy and probably one of the best captains I had," Delano said. "He was ready to go anytime."

Campbell lived with his wife in a motor home in Bethel Island for the spring, summer and early fall while he worked as a vessel operator.

In the colder months, Delano said Campbell and his wife would lead an annual caravan of motor homes to Baja California, Mexico.

Delano said there are tentative plans to hold a memorial for Campbell toward the end of the month on Bethel Island, and to scatter his ashes in the San Joaquin River. Campbell is survived by his wife and an adult daughter."
Note: Dave Delano is Phil's father and his employer.

Very, very sad news...

We just saw Jerry last w/e. I was with a friend on his boat when we experienced a break-down. Jerry came to the rescue. He towed us back to Disco Bay. We had a nice conversation, gave him a sandwich and cold soda and he was on his way. He seemed very happy with his life at the moment...

I first met Jerry 5 years ago when we moved our motorhome to the Sugar Barge storage. He did the paperwork for me. He also invited me to hang out on his cruiser while it was tied up next to the ramp with him to shoot the breeze.

I always enjoyed a short conversation with him when we'd run into him while either getting or returning our motorhome.

Jerry was a class-act and will be greatly missed...

His Memorial Service is set for Monday, August 31st at Sugar Barge. I will be there and hope to see many of you there too.

From Jerry'S wife, Terry:

"The Celebration of Life for Jerry will be August 31st at the Sugar Barge Resort and Marina. Let's all meet at 2pm and please bring a funny story about Jerry that you'd like to share. Hummmmm we are talking about my Jerry so I know all of... you have lots of funny stories ... perhaps we should have a three funny story limit : ) There are simply not words to begin to tell you how wonderful all of you are!"

The service was really really nice! I would guess between 50-75 people were there; the upper deck of Sugar Barge was standing room only.

First they did the formal military presentation of the flag to Terry by 3 Air Force guys---in full dark blue uniform no less! I bet they were really really hot! One of the guys played the "auto" taps....hehehe. [No body knows how to bugle anymore].

Most of the Vessel Assist boats were there along with USCG, CC Sheriff, and an East Co Co Fire Boat. A total of 19 boats proceeded down Piper, through the wall opening and across Franks Tract. Near the northeast side of Franks, two VA boats stopped and the rest of us circled around. His ashes were scattered, then everyone threw flowers into the water. We all tooted our horns in salute to Jerry. The fire boat sprayed water and lead the procession back to SB. After that we all gathered on the upper deck and chowed down. Dave Riggs provided a great buffet with freshly bbq'd tri tip and chicken and the Rib Factory provided bbq ribs. Several salads, fresh veggies and dip, you name it.! All beverages were also free.

The weather was beautiful with a nice stiff breeze and bright sunny skies. The water was very clear and sparkling. Katie Senor was on my boat and took tons of photos. I'll post them when I get them........

Jerry really had a lot of friends and most of them managed to show up to pay tribute to a great guy. May he rest in peace and God Bless his family.

Liz,

Thanks for posting this. Work prevented me from attending, but I'm glad Jerry got a good send off. It really was a Delta tragedy to lose him!
