Ken,

We're thinking of moving up from our 292 to the 3560. I've never had an IB before. What have you found to be significant differences between the IB & IO in your boat?

Do you have DTS controls?

One thing we'd like to improve on is noise when underway.

Thanks,

Bob

I'm not ken, but in the same model boat, the norm is mileage is going to be less w/ inboards as opposed to i/o's

Hi Bob,

I'm not Ken either, but still a Regal owner...
I agree w/KiDa (also a former Regal owner I believe) about the performance and fuel economy with the I/O vs the Inboards.
They say the Inboards do handle better around the dock..

As for noise, I question the exhaust being any quieter above the water with the Inboard.. when it's buried way below the water with the I/O... so pros/cons to each setup as always.

If in salt water, I'd say Inboard - if in Fresh Water you could go either way, but I'd tend to lean towards the I/O's for the performance.. and fuel economy.

I know there are others who will argue that Inboard is the way to go... Greg (Canada) has this boat with I/O and I believe that Tom (Pleasure Time) had a 3560 as well... I don't recall if PT had I/O or Inboards.

Bigger than 3560, I'd go with Inboards.. or IPS... 3560 is probably close to the cut off for the I/O option.

IO top speed about 50 MPH

IB top speed about 40 MPH (Ken to confirm)

IB better out of the hole.

30% more fuel efficent with IO the 3560 IO with 1100 litre tanks can go about 350 miles.

As far as exhausts, with the volvo dual props the exhaust actually comes out above the props and sound throtty ie: pretty good as opposed to merc bravo 3's that the exhaust comes out thru the props.

With salt water IB would be preferred unless ocean composite drives.

Bob, you got some pretty good responses to your 3560 question, about all I can do is confirm the responses. I had a 2005 3560IB (8.1L GI's), the boat handled great however a little to much bow rise when cruising to suit me, unless running up in the 4000+ RPM range. You'll love the way the inboards handle around the dock but I suspect that you won't be happy with the fuel burn, expect .5 to .8 mpg cruising as compared to 1.2-1.5 mpg from the same boat equipped with OD's.

Like stated above, if you boat in salt water I would suggest either IB's or the osxi OD's, in fresh water either of the OD systems would be a good choice. For resale the osxi,s (in my opinion) would be more appealing for salt water boaters.

The DTS controls are only available on Mercs so that may sway your choice. However, have you heard of the HelmView system. It's a color monitor/system that can be interfaced to the Volvo Penta MPI engines and will display virtually all engine data, including trouble codes, outdrive position, fuel usage, etc. It's not DTS but it sounds like a great addition to any boat.

Good Luck with you choice, the 3560 in my favorite boat in this size range.

I can't add anything more useful than already added. Obviously the 3560 is available in both IB and IO. I love the speed of this size of boat. Personally, I prefer IO to IB anytime. Although maintenance is somewhat cheaper in salt with IB, as long as you keep an eye on things the fuel consumption difference would help pay for any additional maintenance costs and give better performance. I can't comment on noise difference between similar 3560's IO vs IB, I've never physically seen an IB version.

Good luck with your search. IB or IO, they are nice boats.

Everyone above has good, accurate comments. Let me add that we love the layout of this boat.

DTS was not available when mine was built in '05 (I called the factory to try and get it). I would definitly get DTS if available.

The boat is noisy at cruise, and conversation is difficult. 'Don't know if the I/O is much quieter since alot of the noise is wind noise.
Top speed is right at 40 and mpg running cruise is .8 to 1.0 mpg. at 3500 rpm.

IB is the only way to go if you are keeping her in a saltwater slip.
If you are on a lift or rack storage, the performance advantages of the I/O's warrant serious consideration. She'll do over 50 with the I/O's.

The handling is easy for docking when you pivot around with the shifters. At cruise, I feel like I'm piloting a motorhome. Nothing sporty about it.

As far as noise, just for fun some day Ken, take all your canvas off including folding the roof back.

We do it about 2 or 3 times a year when we are going to do a long run on a nice day.

I was shocked when cruising at 33 MPH +/- how whisper quiet the boat ran (I/O's) with all the canvas off. Normal conversation levels et al.

It was almost spooky.

Actually, we use our cockpit cover during the week so we don't leave our camper/canvas up all the time except for weekends.. (It's a little more work changing around before we leave on Sunday)
When we take the boat out I prefer to run it with the canvas down.. I don't like running with it up, and I really don't like docking with it up... but then again if it's nasty out, it's nice to have it up... so I'll do it if needed.. anything to keep the admiral dry. :)

I prefer having the canvas up so I can have as much shade as possible on those hot sunny days and as much protection from the elements as possible on those days when not so pleasant. It's such a hassle putting it up and down I just leave it up, it stays under cover at the marina so the cockpit cover isn't always snapped on and canvas up helps with keeping the dew and other nasty stuff off. As for the exhaust noise, the IB will be louder than the OD but man, you learn to love the way that IB handles around the dock. You can't go bad wrong with either system as long as it's spelled REGAL.
