I will be coming up the Hudson from Brick, NJ. Want to stay at Haverstraw 2 nights and then take a ride further north. Is Kingston a good stop. We will only have 5 nights for this trip. Thanks Steve

Got to Roundout.
Nice place.
Just below Kingston.

I always thought Rondout was Kingston. There are several marinas on the Rondout plus the city dock as you first enter the Creek. Catskill Marina on the Catskill Creek, about another 20-30 minutes north, is a nice, quiet and very pleasant place to spend an evening or two as well.

Is it? Maybe your right. But I don't think that town right there is Kingston, but it is very close. We liked Rondout, it was very queit and quant. The biggest pain was some boatbum on a boat named Freedom....kidding! It's a nice place and Dan is cool!

Rondout Yacht Basin is actually in Connelly, NY. The City of Kingston waterfront is across the creek. The town dock is $1.50 per foot and has electric and water, you can walk to everything. If you go to the RYB, they have a very nice pool, nice grounds with grills and a snack bar. You'll have to dink to town. A couple of the restaurants have free car service to the yacht basin which is nice. Either way, the Rondout Creek is a wonderful place. If you are staying for a couple of days, and have a dink, take a ride upstream to the end, it probably goes a mile back. There are a couple of small marinas back there. Go into Rondout Bay Marina, it's a loud outside bar with live music on weekends! It's a blast! Have fun.

Dave and a group of us stayed in Roundout, nothing fancy, but just a great feeling being there.Reminded me of what boating use to be when I was a kid, loking forward to the day I go back there.

Depending on what time you leave Haverstraw you might want to stop in Newburgh for lunch. There are about 7 restaurants along the waterfront with free docking at Torches (if you eat there) or flat rate $20 at Front Street Marina where you have a choice of a few spots. Have your camera ready once you leave Haverstraw since the views are terrific.

Lets split hairs... "Roundout Creek" is the name of the creek off the Hudson that serves the city of Kingston. "Roundout Yacht Basin" is on the southern side of the creek, hence "Just Below Kingston".

Seriously, it is one of our favorite destinations with the kids. In fact, we've gone there at least once a year for the last five years. We stay at RYB for the pool, the small play ground, grass, etc...and of course "freedom". It's an easy dink or cab ride to Kingston where the restaurants are (as well as the Hudson River Museum).

We did do a "couples" trip last year and stayed right at the town docks...it was strictly for partying, nothing too much for kids to do.

And yes, the vistas from Peekskill to Newburgh are simply awesome. Read "The Chaining of the Hudson" or even "1776" for some history on the Hudson....a big part of the American Revolution took place right here.

FYI, the Rondout Creek extends 3 and a half miles from the Kingston Point lighthouse to the head of navigation at the dam in Eddyville. The Rondout Yacht Basin is the biggest and best facility on the creek, with pool, pumpout, gas, many docks, and a Tiki Hut for lunch. I believe there also are shuttles available to the town dock across the creek. The town dock itself is right in town, and is more spartan, but is right next to all the restaurants, and there's EVERYTHING to eat on the Rondout waterfront...

And we've got PT boats, too! (check out "Fleet Obsolete"). And fireboats, tug boats, the Maritime Museum, and charterboats...

If you're really feeling adventurous, head up the creek nearly two miles further from the Rondout Yacht Basin, and eventually you end up in one of the most secluded "gunkholes" on the entire Hudson, one with marine facilities and places to eat to boot. An RO above recommended Rondout Bay - I'm glad he had a good time there, the owner is a nice fellow. Personally my tastes run more along the lines of the neighboring Anchorage Marina and Restaurant, which is where I keep my boats. There is also an ice cream parlor across the street! Or you can just anchor out like many people do and enjoy the rustic environment, swim right off your boat, catch a big large or smallmouth bass or nice catfish, or watch the sunset over the nearby hills. For history buffs, Lock #1 of the old Delaware and Hudson Canal still exists and is located in someone's front yard, across the street from the Anchorage Restaurant (hence the name "canal street")...

Oh, and to be accurate, Rondout IS in fact a little south of Kingston. The city of Kingston is NOT convenient to the creek by boat. You need a taxi or a friend with a car to get there, 'cause its several miles away up big hills. The Rondout/Port Ewen/Connelly/Eddyville "metroplex" (yeah, right :)) is what lines the Rondout Creek shoreline...

both Roundout and Catskill are great! I dockedc by the Hudson River Maritime Museum, right next to the Steel House (good food) and Rosalita's. Catskill Marina was wonderful -- some good shopping if you're into arts or antiques (try City Lights -- the admiral spent a fortune there) -- plus a great Italian restaurant at the far end of Main Street. We had a blast!

Considering the differences between Catskill and Kingston, I feel you will be better off in Kgn.. That's because the waterfront area is much better suited to a vacation than Catskill if you want to dine out.
There isn't much in the city of Catskill that is within walking distance whereas in Kgn, there are many places to go for lunch and dinner. There are also, as mentioned above, some other attractions. But if you want to sit at the dock and snooze, then perhaps Catskill is for you. I'd almost suggest sacrificing extra days from Haverstraw to spend them up this way.
Just tell us they don't play banjo's in jersey ok? ;) if anyone from L.I. is up here and they hear one there might be some kinda emotion commotion. [:-jester]

I am glad my comment that RYB is "just below Kingston" was accurate!
We totally enjoyed the Hudson run.
Except for the occasional banjo, it was alot of fun and yes, we are considering returning next year!
Though not as high as RYB, though if I buy the boat on Lake Erie, I will be running past it!

Dan,
Maybe if we come up to Haverstraw again, you can come down? We are looking at the week before the 7/4 2009 heading, with catching the fireworks at bowline on 7/3.

As much as we'd like to, we are (if anything) coming North then. We retire this year and we're heading South! We have to be North of Fla. by June 1st '09 and things are all over the floor as far as '09 is concerned.
If we're lucky we don't stop until we hit the Abacos.

Rondout/Kingston is good. We would still like to take a trip up there this year.

Steve , sounds like the gang beat me to it with all the good info. you got. One resturant we liked at roundout was called ship to shore right across from the city docks or they will pick you up from RYB don't have the ph.# handy but it should be easy to find if ya ask around, have a great trip.

Hey Dan , looks like plans changed again , gonna try and head up sunday morning the 13th and stopping by FREEDOM to say hi is becoming a tradition , won't be the same next year with her gone.
BTW the banjo clip was funny, that movie was an oldie but goodie,
so long , Jon

I don't know when you were last in Catskill, but it is a revitalized town with lots of great eats, plenty of shops and the old, rickety movie theater even has first-run films. From authentic Thai (Wasana's) to terrific Italian (La Conca D'Oro) to gourmet cuisine (Bell's Cafe) and plenty of simple fair, there are a lot of great eats and all within a short walk from Catskill Marina. I've even found a couple of fun watering holes when I've stayed there that don't require a tipsy dink ride home. The marina itself has a heated pool, super-clean facilities, plenty of gas grills to use and even an outdoor fireplace that anyone can fire up. It is a great, park-like spot to stay for a night or much longer. The Kingston waterfront is terrific and I have also enjoyed staying at RYB and time on the hook at the end of the creek, but don't count out Catskill for fear that there is nothing to do.
