Hello, I recently bought a 2000 Chris Craft with a VolvoPenta 5.0Gi. It had a knocking/ticking sound similar to spark knock. I thought maybe just older gas but that did not clear it up. I changed the distributor cap which had significant corrosion on the contacts. That did not help. I am struggling to locate the sound. I have attached two audio recordings, one at idle and one at 3000rpm. Any ideas?

I am no expert, but it sounds like two different noises to me. The 3000 rpm sounds like a pulley bearing???? The idle sounds like lifter noise???? No clue.

cannot detect anything in the first, but the second sounds like loose rockers

first one can't deduce much but the second one could be valve train noise. Try briefly removing the belt and see if it disappears. With the belt off, engine off check each engine driven accessory pulley for play, excessive looseness, noise or roughness of the bearings.
If it seems like it is coming from the valve covers, you can read up on how to set the hydraulic lifter adjustment on the small block Chevrolet, assuming it has an adjustable valve train. This is a bit complex and confusing so make sure you fully understand the process before starting.
I had to do this when I replaced the cyl heads on my 4.3 V6 about 7 years ago. I used zero lash and one turn more as per the manual (OMC & General Motors).
