Ok all you hudson folks:

I am looking on planning my summer 2011 trip. I have a few questions:

1. Distance from NYC to Lake Champlain by boat?
2. where to stop along the way on the Hudson South of Troy and north of Troy.
3. Where to go once I am in the Lake?
4. Everything if possible kid freindly 14 and 15 y/o but history or forts would be cool, Pool is great but not neccessary.
5. How far into the lake do I need to go to make the trip worth it?
6. Would like to travel 4 hours a day each way and try to spend a whole week in the lake.
7. Any advice would be great thanks.......

Kevin

2) Kingston, Schuyerville and Westport
3) Vergennes?, Mallet's, Burlington and various bays to anchor out in.

Got two weeks? At 4 hours a day you will need at least that to spend a week on the lake IMHO. Think about traveling a little more each day. Don't forget the speed limit on the canal is 10 mph.

get the "cruising guide to new york waterways and lake champlain". it'll tell you everything you need to know (mile by mile, lock by lock, marina by marina).

3 days of 8 hours running each day will put you in Montreal, Canada. It's a trip of a boater's lifetime. One of my favorite trips.

I made the same trip three years ago. My take and blow by blow is in this thread:

Long story short, it is a great trip. As a side note, make sure your insurance covers you where you go. Both policies I have had covered me up to some town in Maine, which is parallel to Burlington, VT. Any farther north and you will need a rider, if you have the same policies I do.

We did this trip a few years ago. It was amazing!! Starting from Croton, we took three nights in transit northbound, stopping at Troy Town Docks, a marina inside the locks, and Whitehall. Southbound, we returned with two nights stopover, in Whitehall, then Troy town docks. Watch the speed limits in the canal. I recommend the cruising guide mentioned above, which has all the right pointers, including getting rubber gloves for the rope handlers.
