I am planning a trip up to the Lake this coming August from Long Island. My boat needs clearance of just under 17'. From what I have read, as long as the canal is at "normal" levels I will have the clearance needed. Could someone please verify this for me. Thank you.

Gene, the lowest bridge is the Mechanicville Railroad bridge. Although the highway bridge just below lock 12 in Whitehall doesn't appear to me to be much higher. The lcckmaster can lower the pool for the Mechanicville bridge if given 24 hour's notice. All this info is on the New York Canal System web site.

My Silverton is 17' 3". I've made it through all the locks from the Hudson to Lake Champlain.

Thank you for the come back. I had checked with the Canal website, but I like to get local knowledge as I have found errors in the past when entering new areas.

That is a great ride from Long island. Take your time and enjoy the Marinas and towns as you head north. I delivered my older boat from Montreal to Long Island sound and the trip went too darn fast.
The stretch from lower Champlain to Whitehall is fascinating.

Fun trip I haven't made it all the way but I was close. If you spend a night at Haverstrew Marina give us a heads up, we have a bunch of members with boats there. I usually vacation the first week in August as well.

It's a great trip, we used to do it every summer on our 28'. One summer, we went all the way to the St. Lawrence, then down through the 1000 islands, and over to Toronto. Came back across the lake to Oswego and returned back on the Erie canal.

How long did this trip take?
I would love to do that!

Hello Gene, sorry I dont get to check into BE often these days, but the other ROs are correct that you should be able to get assistance to (barely!) fit under that Mechanicville bridge. If I can help connect you with the proper canal operator to make sure you fit, please reach out to me, I am a longtime BoaterEd RO and lead the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County which is the land mass to your port from Waterford to Schuylerville. I can help with any accomodations while you are passing by as well. My email is pete at southernsaratoga dot org, or cell phone (518) 522-7251 .
