This might be a little late, but I would 1000% recommend Mystic Seaport Museum. By far our favorite destination. Not expensive, you get admission to the museum and the run of the place after hours. You can dinghy down into the town if you want. Town is about 3/4 miles by foot. The aquarium is about 1 1/4 miles away. Walkable depending on your situation - or call and cab / Uber.
If you go to Mystic you need to time your transit under the "highway" bridge to get to the seaport. It opens 1x per hour at 40 minutes after. it is VERY low - only a very small boat can fit under it when closed. If you miss it - you wait so plan your arrival time. You also need to pass through a rail road bridge first that opens on demand except when trains are coming. It's about a 30 minute no-wake ride from the mouth of the river up to the rail bridge.
