As most of you are aware, I do post on this site to keep you updated on progress with the issues we have with Water hyacinth and Egeria. I would like to also make you aware of a huge part of our program, life jacket safety and awareness. Enclosed is a schedule of the Marina's DBW will be visiting this summer to draw attention to a serious topic. There will be free life jacket giveaways as well as other events and goodies planned. Please visit the website below to get the specifics and see when we will be visiting a marina near. For better or for worse, this will be a chance to have a conversation face to face with me. Pass this on as this is an important project for the state as well as this department.

pkjryan,

Last year, 4th of July at Mandville we got a free inflatable life jacket from your group - so maybe we met!

That is such a great thing you guys do. My 16 year old has pretty much taken the jacket and wears it all the time on the boat because it is so comfortable!

Hopefully we will see you again, and this time, put a face to the name!

Jim

I see you'll be on Piper Slu three times: once at Sugar Barge and twice at Russo's. Maybe I'll stop by one of these events to say Hi!

I learned a lot of things from my Air Force Water Survival Class.

1. Any body of water under 98.6 degrees is bad, my body will try to heat it up to 98.6

2. In a SAR effort, I am small, ocean is big, use a mirror, smoke, yellow sea dye, strobe
light or carry a radio. Chris and I have a hand held radio attached to our inflatable
vests and a water activated strobe, plastic whistle & mirror. Even our dog has a
water activated strobe attached to her life jacket. I flew SAR missions in the Gulf
of Tonkin and it is hard to see a person in the water.

3. Daytime, smoke or a mirror work well for aircraft, a whistle might help with boats.

4. Nighttime, the strobe or flare work well.

5. Radios break.

6. Kicking or punching a shark's nose only works 4 times. Then you have run out of arms
and legs. (I didn't think that was too funny at the time)

7. Do not inflate your 20 man life raft inside the aircraft. Don't laugh, it happened.

I have added some things to that as I keep aging, have a water activated vest with the lifting ring on it. My wife cannot lift me out of the water so we have the metal "rings"
which would allow her to use the Davit to lift me if I were unconscious. I have read where people have stood on the anchor while someone slowly lifted them up. I guess that might work for some people.

Inland? Make a right turn until you hear crunching, then wait for rescue I guess.

I know I am into overkill, but when it comes to my family, it is worth it.
