Looking to plan a two getaway with the GF. Next couple of weeks are going to be hectic for the both of us. I have the US open coming up and the surf tournament in long beach, and she will be going back to school to get her doctorate, while working full time.

Looking to go around mid sept for a quiet weekend..Tobay is the only place that stands out but I was looking for a change. Been there done that, at Tobay..Thought about going to Fire Island, but not thrilled with the idea.

I also thought about anchoring over night, but my generator is not reliable so shore power would be best.

Any ideas?

Snapper inn
Flynns
Sailors haven.
Watch hill.
Cedar is ok after labor day.
Atlantique too.

Got a empty slip in the anchorage for you if you want too.

Snapper Inn : you pay 75 bucks, has electric and water, no reservations (suggest you leave on a Friday) only have 4 slips. The $75.00 is a credit you use in the restaurant or bar, so it is really free. They have live music outside by the docks (Tiki Bar)

Flynns:
Part of your dockage fee goes to the returant, you could walk to Ocean Beach (nice little town)They do take reservations).

I think Flynns would be the most fun for your GF, FI is a party place on the weekends and most will be around your age.

Dave, thanks, I might take you up on that.

Walt, all good suggestions. Me and the GF are 28 and 29 going on 50 lol, the days of loud music and drinking are long gone. We grew up too fast lol

Don, can I get into cedar beach being a town of oyster bay resident?

Yes.....it will cost more $$$ then if you where a TOB resident...........after Labor day its cheaper.

Matt if you want the slip call me. Or go to snapper.

Hello folks!

Just found this site.

I boat out of freeport.

I am heading east this afternoon.

I'm going to spend the night on the hook in Hemlock Cove then head out to the river in Oakdale.

Im either going to spend another night on the hook in the river or that $75 Snapper Inn deal sounds really good.

My old vessel is 43', but she is really beamy at 16'3.

Does anyone know if the Snapper Inn has atleast a 17' slip?

What about the Riverview and docking there?

Then saturday I'm going over to watch Hill and I could use some advise for anchoring off.

I have not been there in a few years but I recall boats that are waiting for slips and/or just hanging out drop the hook to the west just outside the entrance to the marina, is this still the case?

I am meeting a friend w/ a 25fter, my boat becomes the mothership and we take his clamming!!!!!

Cheers!

Snapper has a slip which I think is 16', maybe 16' 5" but it's a end slip against the bulkhead.
I was in it last weekend. You can call them and ask if it's available, it is called the bride and groom slip.
If not that, then there is always room against the east bulkhead.
This is a 100' long of just open dock, but electic is limited over there.
You can definately lay up there but it has real low poles on that side, so you need alot of fenders for protection.
I would not want to ride the hurricane out in that spot as it as little to no protection in front, side and against the dock you lose a fender and your in trouble!

Riverview has some big slips but no electric and I don't think you can stay overnight!

Watch Hill you may want to make a reservation for the same day arrival to make sure they have one for your beam.
You can make a same day reservation only. Call in morning, arrive by 9:30pm.

Good luck and Welcome to BE!

Please keep an eye out on the weather. Saturday will begin the mess that may arrive.
Not sure of the track 100% or if it will keep the cat 1 or 2 status. Even a tropical storm can be a problem on the water. Good luck.

Thanks for the info!

I will call the Snapper Inn today after they open.

If I cant get that large slip, what are your thoughts anchoring overnight in the river?

On Saturday I just want to anchor off Watch Hill, I dont need a slip, I will be there until like 6pm, then I am heading back to Freeport.

This is if the weather holds up. Friday looks to be the best day w/ sunshine.

Saturday we will be clamming in the rain!!!

No matter what I can abort the plan at any time and be back at the home port in a couple of hours...

Lots of boats anchor in the river overnight.
Right in front of snapper it is bright and wide open.
Saturday night I would say there was like 4 sailboats and 3 large boats anchored with anchor lights on all night.
If you can get the east bulkhead, then take it. The slip may be a real tight fit for you as there is no maneuver room and like the east bulkhead the poles are low. There is one high pole and I aimed for that to keep me off those low poles.
Getting out of that slip in a strong wind is not fun either!

I think your size boat is best off against that bulkhead and not in the slip. Also guy in office really does not know the slip sizes. He said another slip was 16 and Walter tried to get in it with his 13' 10" beam and he didn't fit!

If you anchor, make sure you have a danforth. I have seen the delta's have trouble in there as it is a brackish river so not the normal sand or mud we are used too. More of very hard riverbed.

OK so I think I will just anchor in the river then.

funny, that was one of the first upgrades I made last year after i bought the boat, a new Good brand windless, new rode w/ 20ft of chain and a oversized danforth high tensile anchor.

Can you give me any insight about anchoring off of the entre=ance to Watch Hill?

Doug,
Your pushing the quesitons! Only kidding. Your size boat off of Watch Hill. I really have no good advice. It's very shallow outside the channel there. I do see boats anchor and I have anchored but it's mostly express boats and when I anchored I had my 24' with outdrive. You will find that a low tide there is a huge sandbar showing. I see some people anchor off of this and float in deep water. This is to the west of the entrance. To the east I think it is even worse.

If you are gonna anchor I would stay pretty far off shore. Perhaps your friend with the 25' can get you some depth soundings before you track in there. I really don't want to tell you where to go. If it was me, I would take your boat inside and go into a day slip since I doubt you will find a slip with electric available. The day slips are plenty wide, have a brand new dock and good water. yes it will cost you $2.25 a foot but you will know you are safe! In my view $100 dock fee is better than $3000 in damaged running gear.

Your call, your boat. Take a look a google satellite of the water outside watch hill and you will see what I mean.
Plus if weather does kick up at least you will be secure!

So I went to Oakdale on Friday morning anchored up the river, what a beautiful and peaceful place to be on the hook. In the afternoon I docked at the "View" and had lunch with some friends. It was a good location with a mixed crowd so I basically stayed there the whole night. The dock guy only charged me $20 because we had lunch there, and then I flipped him another $20 to keep him happy too!

I left Oakdale in the morning without my GPS working and with the fog it was an interesting ride back. I just took it nice and slow, no issues. With the GPS out and the storm heading in, I just went back to Freeport.

I am gonna try to get to Watch Hill this weekend....

Thank you again for your help!!!!!!!!!

Glad it worked out.
How was food at the view?
it used to be called the Riverview, but it changed recently and I have heard mixed reviews.

Well I only had the steak sandwich and fries which was pretty good and my buddy had a burger so you really can't go by what we ate, we also had a dozen raw little necks, some were just a tad too big, but we sucked em down anyway!

we sat at the bar and I will tell you the middle aged women bartender was more like an ol' crab and we were bothering her! It wasnt even that busy.

So after we ate and waited way too long for her to get our next set of drinks, we just went back to the boat to hang out.

Let me tell you, the drinks are a lot cheaper on the boat ! hahaha

Friday night the crowd was really mixed, I'd say mid 20's through early 60's. It made for some good "drunk people watching", of course some dude fell in the water.

Funniest was in the afternoon, some guy comes in trying to dock a twin engine older wellcraft express probably 30-35 fter, had no idea what he was doing, I think he hit the poles like 5 or 6 times, but he has twin motors???? LoL

Nothing wrong with hitting the poles while docking. Sometimes you need that extra push to help kick the stern a certain way or to even help the bow around without tying off then trying to get it to swing.

Yeah no doubt, this guy clearly had no idea how to handle the gears.

He just needs more practice, we've all been there...
