Any recommendations for a local surveyor? My insurance company said I need to get an out of water survey done for a "valuation survey".

Has anyone else had to do this?

Thanks
Ed

I had to with my last boat after it was 12 years old. My local guy past away

Earliest appt I could get was in two weeks …

Steve maddock. What kind of boat? Some carriers will write without a survey,

Are you guys insured through NBOA?
They contacted me recently asking for an out of the water insurance survey.
I provided them with a pre-purchase survey when I first bought the boat in December of 2016.
Despite having that survey, they wanted another one. Unreal! I went back and forth with them and they finally agreed to just continue to accept the December 2016 survey but told me I would have to have an insurance survey done before that one is 5 years old, and every 5 years after that.
They had the best price when I was shopping for insurance 2 years ago. Now I think I understand why.
As long as I’m going to have to pay for a survey in 2021, I think I’m going call my old broker, Alan Mott Agency, and ask them to shop around for a new carrier once I get it done. Hopefully they can find one that won’t want a survey every 5 years.

Yes, exactly, I'm insured through NBOA. I guess it's time to shop around, I really don't want to spend a grand!

Thank you for the recommendations.

Ed

I had to do have one in April also insured thru NBOA Will find the info for the surveyor I think it was 600 or so will get back to you. This was in Lindenhurst.

I write with about 8 different carriers, some will accept a self survey form. Or not require it at all. All are a rated carriers

That’s good to know. I’ll keep you in mind when it’s time to shop around.

Just a thought???
If you want someone to survey a boat for insurance purposes, I suggest you hire a lazy moron that just wants a pay check. LOL

Often the survey rules do not kick in until the boat reaches its 15th birthday - similar to financing a boat the rules change at 15 years.

Mine was 10 years old when they made me get one

Sorry to hear that - glad it didn't happen to us.

It's actually a good thing. Otherwise, they could be insuring boats that are worth nothing, and paying out claims on those boats. It helps prevent fraud, which increases rates.
