I'm in the market for a new head (boat, that is) and I'd like to know what models are the easiest to rebuild. From all I've read it's not IF but WHEN a manual toity will need repair. The prices on these things go from not to bad to somewhere in the stratosphere. Does price really equal quality and ease of repair?
Something comfy, with a seatbelt perhaps.

I can only say that I replaced my Jabsco manual head with a Raritan PHII. It has been easier to maintain (lubricate on a regular basis, change joker valve on a regular basis and simple rebuild) than the Jabsco. But the best issue for me is how easy it is to use for the guests on board.

+1

Put mine in last year and it is without a doubt the best one I ever used, saw or heard tell of. Easy to install and so far has been totally clog proof.Plus, it uses VERY little water.

I've heard nothing but good things about the Raritan Elegance. A friend put one in her boat and she is very pleased with it. Since then she has had a lot of problems with the boat and is thinking of donating it to get rid of it. If she does, I'm going to try to talk her out of the head.

If that's too rich for your blood or you just want to stay with a manual raw water head, the cheapest Jabsco which goes on sale from time to time will fit the bill.

I've never rebuilt mine, I replaced it because it was about ten years old. The rebuild kit is close to one half the cost of new and it's just a remove and replace job to replace it.

If you decide to rebuild a head, it's probably easier to remove it and do the work on a workbench or table, then reinstall it.

Jeff,

I'm going to be +3 or +4 for the Raritan Marine Elegance. It's a great head and a great upgrade. However, if you're staying manualy, I've got all kinds of rebuilt parts left over (new, in bags, except the first item) from my old head:

Used Jabsco Electric Conversion - 29200-0120
Jabsco Service Kit - 29101-000
Jabsco Bowl Mounting Kit - 29047-000
Jabsco Intake Seal & Elbow - 29048-0000
Jabsco Major Service Kit - 29045-2000

Jeff, check the footprint required for a Raritan ME. I too wanted a ME to replace my Jabsco but, the base is too deep to fit on the platform. So, it's either wait for Raritan to manufacture a direct Jabsco size replacement (not going to happen soon) or go to a vacuflush.
