So we are starting to think about making the trip from sandy hook to NYC for the fireworks on the 4th july. From the official website it seems that there are three approved anchorage for private vessels.

Coming from the south I cam thinking that buttermilk channel by Governors Island seems to be the closest spot. I would love to get some feedback from others that have made this trip. What was your experience? Where did you go, etc.

Thanks in advance.

We were down there in 86 when they rededicated the Statue of Liberty. while the fireworks were great, it was a total madhouse once they ended. I would never do it again.

We are going to Liberty Landing for the weekend, will watch the fireworks in the park. You really can't see much of the Macy's display from Liberty, but it will be our trip to the city for this year. Also hope to see the "waterfalls" by the Brooklyn Bridge while we are down. Gas prices have really screwed up the recreation this year!

never miss it ! , puts all the other rinky-dink shows to shame. We come from the north down the Harlem riverand anchor at the south end of Rooseevelt island great view spot.

If you come from jersey you want to get thier early cause they close the river before the show, or you can catch it south of there.

Hogan has a point about the knuckel heads taking off after the show flying along in the dark waiting to bash logs against thier hull or worse.
Don't let that scare you away, just sit on the hook for about 10 mins. and they are all gone, nice and calm after that.

This year we are going to see about moorings at the 79th street boat basin to cruise to after the show, so we don't have to put, put all the way back to Stony Point this year.

We usually go with other boats and your more than welcome to join us if your interested, lots of fun & like I said once you see that the other shows just don't come even close.
Hope this helps,best wishes Jon......

Do they let you raft up at the firework show? We were planning on going last year but it was rainy day. Maybe this year would be good.

MJK

Yea you can raft up but the current cranks pretty good in the river there i've seen it get a bit crazy at tide change when boats get to close or spin in different directions, but nothing to worry about really . Coast guard and NYPD are all over the place and i never seen them bust poeples chops, you have to do something pretty bad to piss them off ,they don't tolerate people chucking fireworks off there boats, but you can understand that .

when the time gets closer hopefully some of us from HRCC will get together for it ... Jon.

Hi, JonF. I was looking to anchor at the Southern End of Roosevelt Island as well. I'll be coming up from Jersey, but plan to be there late afternoon and just hang until the show is over. We'll head up river after the show and probably anchor in Flushing Bay to the soft sounds of LaGuardia! I was always worried about the currents there, but it sounds like you have had no problems. I guess the closer to Queens, the easier the flow. Thanks for the info and look forward to seeing everyone there!

ok keep in touch the more the merrier gonna check into moorings at 79th st. boat basin for a close spot to head to after the show if your interested I 'LL let you know, there cheap like a buck a foot or so just hook on and your done no dragging to worry about, just hang out enjoy a few drinks with friends and watch the cars go by on the west side hwy., heading for kingston in a few for the weekend if your around sun. were gonna come back and try to meet up with Hogan and the crew probably at croton,

Have a good weekend "wine down" nice to hear from you, Jon

We have no trips planned this year and this is really sounding good. All it is going to take is some serious convincing of the crew.

The 4th is on a friday this year so hopefully we will get a bunch of boats this year , I was thinking of 79th st. morrings to hang out on for the night after the fireworks cause it close , but the depths look shallow on the chart for the bigger boats, but I see sailboats on them so I'm guessing it's deep enough.
Anyone have any ideas about a place close by were we could go or raft up after the show so everyone doesn't have to drive home in the dark ?( somewhere in the east river or sound mabey ??? )be nice to go somewhere close afterwards and enjoy a few drinks without having to drive home half in the bag.

Hope we get a few boats to go this year, a month goes quick & july will be here before we know it. be nice to see some hrcc boats going this year ..... Jon.

4 Weeks to go so far 2 boats heading down w/us one from newburgh , one from piermont. Wondering if anyone elese has set plans yet?

We'll be enjoying the Bowline fireworks.

Ah yes the July 3rd Bowline Fireworks. Is Tarrytown having the July 4th fireworks as well?

June 21st as well from Bowline for the Italian Festival

June 27th or 28th is supposed the Bear Mountain Fireworks.

It's going to be a great couple of weekends for fireworks close to home!

Would be nice to stay close to home i see your point there. i'm not really big on fireworks but macys show kicks butt compared to most local shows, well everyone have fun where ever you are, just bieng out there with friends and family is really what it's all about anyway...
happy 4th in advance all....Jon

We were going to go to Kingston for their July 4th Celebration/carnival but my daughter no longer likes the boat so that means no more trips. She panics when the boat is moving and will last only 1 night overboard at the docks before wanting to leave. I saw this coming but thanks to the economy I really cant get out of the boat without taking a really bad beating in sale price IF anyone wanted the boat.

rob, that's too bad, my two sons have been on the boat since they were a week old, they are now 17 & 13 and both still look forward to weekends on the boat.

Sure it doesn't have anything to do with the penny bridge gang & bridges !?

(listen guys it's just my sad attempt at humor, please don't cruicify me for a joke )
:) :) :) ha ha ... Jon

When I was a kid, there were things I didn't like. I learned to like them. Pro'ly not PC these days I guess.

Bridges, what bridges. Theres no bridges between the marina and the pond! is there?
