Hudson River Is Scene of July 4 Fireworks
NEW YORK (AP) -- The nation's largest Fourth of July fireworks will be held on the Hudson River this year to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage to New York.
Macy's holiday fireworks are usually held on the East River and can be seen from Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. The pyrotechnics were last staged on the Hudson River in 2000 and viewed by spectators on Manhattan's West Side and New Jersey.
The change was announced in a Macy's press release last month. Macy's says six barges along Manhattan's West Side will fire 40,000 shells in sync with patriotic and river-themed songs.
The Hudson River was where Macy's Fourth of July fireworks began in 1958. The fireworks attract millions of local spectators and are televised nationwide.
