If you are really serious about anchoring out at Mandeville Tip for the fireworks, first go over there some weekend soon and check out the area; get the "lay of the land" so to speak. Then plan to get an anchorage a couple of weeks before the fourth of July. They fill up very very quickly!!!!

Anchors slip, not because the water is too deep per say. Rather there isn't enough room to put out enough scope. If you have all chain rode, you can get by with less scope. It can get very very windy out there, especially in the late afternoon. Sometimes entire raft ups will drag anchor. Also, if your anchor sets into the weeds on the bottom, your anchor will drag. The only way you can be certain to not drag is to be tied to a tree or bush on an island. Those spots are taken up first.

If you want to miss out of all the excitement [crazy people and dragging anchors], you can still anchor out away from the crowds and see the fireworks. I like to do that and just drive through the throngs of crazies during the day. And see the pictures, read about the happenings, in B & D Yachtsman in the August issue!

Good luck!

Whats the best way to drive there? 8 mile rd?
are there roads on mandeville?
where is this area you menthoned
i talked to form searay members up from delta
on the amenican last weekend, they menthoned about an area near the deep water channel
maybe near some other house ( not hilton)
that would be a great place to anchor.
i would like to meet the sacramento bayliner club there, but was told no trip is planned
so if iam on my own,ide rather have a safer anchor place .
thanks in advance again.

It would be better to scope it out via boat. Hilton's Duck Hunting Lodge is a private island. He arrives by helicopter. Yes, there is a way to drive to Mandeville Island. All of that is private property and I'm sure they keep everyone out who is not authorized. There are no others ways to drive via vehicle. However lots of areas on 8 Mile Rd would have a good view of the fireworks.

Take a look at a chart or map of the area. Find "Mandeville Tip" so you can see how remote this area is except to boats. Then imagine 3000 boats all anchored in the area. You will NOT find a decent place to anchor unless you go a week or so before the Fourth.

The area can be very windy, especially in the late afternoon, so a good anchorage is mandetory. But you can see the fireworks from many miles away....even Mildred Island and Franks Tract. So look for a nice anchorage away from the zoo and enjoy the fireworks from there.

Bill,

I'll try to post something later with some advice and an update on SBC

I, too, am planning my first foray into the mob scene of Delta Fireworks at Mandeville Point. I'll be watching this thread for tips and advice. Thanks, FB, for the advice about getting there a week before. I plan to arrive the day of the festivities, so will plan to find a nice anchorage spot nearby, but not in the thick of it all. If anyone going wants to raft up for an afternoon in a closeby area like the Bedrooms (other side of Venice Island), email me at flywright34 at gmail dot com.

Bill,
There are some general rules for Mandeville on the 4th.

Count on a never ending amount of traffic up and down the San Joaquin channel. With this traffic comes wakes; the closer you are to the channel the more wake you will suffer. The prevailing wind generally comes from Hilton's duck club (building with high windows at NW corner of intersection) towards the House (SE corner). This means that you will be primarily broadside to the wakes.

The area will be crowded with most of the boats just south of the cut though the Madeveville Tip. There is usually room to anchor at the east end of the tip, even on the 4th. The trick is to find an area that is shallow enough to get a good anchor set with the proper scope (5 to 1). You can also anchor in Three River Reach although it too will be crowded by the 4th. There is less traffic (and fun) over there.

The Sacramento Bayliner Club generally has a good presense at Mandeville Tip, but it isn't an official club raft out. We anchor east of the cut through the tip and are generally flying a lot of American flags (I know there are a lot of flags). We monitor channel 72 on the VHF; if you'd like to join us, give us a hail and I'm sure you'll be accomodated.

Mandeville is a lot of fun and many boats will get there early. However, you can enjoy most of the fun, by anchoring wherever you can find a safe and secure spot. Lower your dink, put on swim suits, load up some beverages and squirt guns and cruise through all of the boats. You will uundoubtably get into some waterfights, meet some new people and have a good time.

I hope that some of this info helps out. A lot of people think it is too wild out there and will scare newcomers off, but we find it a good crowd and always have fun.

We're going to be there for the first time this year also. We actually got our spot yesterday! We went out with a friend of ours. He's spending 3 weeks there, does it every year, and he invited us along. We tied up with him, set our anchors and then he took us back to shore since we couldn't get that much time off. Our boats are already in with others that we know - it's going to be one huge party! We're really looking forward to our first fourth of July 'experience'!

Well, Steve, you are wise to get your spot so early! Although I think this year it will be less crowded since boat usage is down significantly. Maybe I should plan a night on the hook this 4th of July......
