Altho I lived on Governors Island for a year, I didnt go into town much cuz it scared the crap out of me. So I dont know much about the area.
So the question i have is this (cuz we were looking at google earth) Is Manhattan livable above Harlem? Does the war zone extend al the way to the north point or does it stop somewhere and revert to a decent neighborhood as you head further north? Is it safe to circumnavigate the entire island?

Harlem has become a very desirable area to live, the far upper west side has always been a very exclusive and safe area.

Yes, it is perfectly safe to circumnavigate the island - unless some punks decide to drop a "Kennedy Fried Chicken" box full of rocks and dirt onto your boat... I like to plan my trips early in the morning, before they are awake!

It's safe to navigate the island, but just watchout for Kennedy Chicken.

Edit: Mike beat me out of the gate.

Yes, it is safe to navigate.

Yes, it is safe to live in the northern section. My wife's cousin has an apartment in Washington heights with a beautiful view of the bridge and Hudson. Also, the section HOGAN refers to is Inwood, it is at the northern western tip of the island.

You were in the military on Governer's Island and afraid to come to Manhattan.....wow!

I'll give another affirmative nod for circumnavigating Manhattan Island. We've done it more than a few times and never had any kind of problem.

I was looking at google maps (which could be years old) on St Nicholas Ave in Washington Heights and it looked like a combat zone. Was just wondering if that was the exception or the rule for the area that far north.

If I was to trailer my boat up there to spend a weekend and cruise around the island, where would be a good jumping off point?

From down south, you would want to avoid crossing a bridge to get to Manhattan so I guess the answer is Northern NJ some place. I'm not familiar with the area but would think Monmouth Beach or Atlantic Highlands would be a nice place to start the trip. The Channel Club is a great destination for us Hudson boaters....you can do the trip in reverse...it's all "inside". Launch at Channel club, go up Shrewsbury river, to Atlantic highlands, around Staten Island, under Verazanno bridge, up to say 79th street boat basin for an overnighter....or others.

Interesting concept you have there. That would be an awesome trip.

Paul your perception of Washington Heights is on the mark.

It may have a great view of the GWB and Hudson River, but that's where it ends. Not on the list of places to see when visiting Manhattan. As Mike stated above, Harlam is and revitalized area where burned out gray stones are now selling for millions of dollars.

Harlem, Williamsburg and DUMBO are communities that were previously war-zones. Then the artist and musicians move in, clean them up a little and then sell them for large profits to young upcoming families.

The most dangerous areas are in the far south of the island in the wall street zone.

Pete, the Washington Heights area to the west of Ft. Washington Blvd, north of 181st St. to the Cloisters, is a gorgeous, safe, upscale neighborhood.

Shadow, you could put your boat in at Haverstraw Marina and take the river south around Manhattan.

Thanks for the info guys. The wife is debating going because I refused to take her to NYC for christmas shopping. Gonna take a good Xmas present to sway her vote...

The wife wnts to go to macy's and fao schwartz. I want to revisit governors island 30 years after school. And maybe meet a bunch of you knuckleheads.
