Marinas for 2009

I know what mine won't be. We have been at the Granary for 5 years. Each year they have gone up a bit, on average probably $100. We have a 25' floating slip, no shore power and a hose for water. Well, this year Georgetown Yacht Basin and The Granary (same owner) decided to raise all slip prices. Ours went up 33%, $1000. I can't imagine what the larger slips went up. I have heard that 12 boats from the Granary are going elsewhere and something like 47 from Georgetown. Apparently the owners even called the other local marinas to try to talk them into going along and raising their prices (didn't work). We have a mooring at our house and I'm thinking of buying a trailer (or maybe giving Mikee my boat for the season).
 
Just a couple weeks ago Georgetown rescinded their effort to raise prices for 09. The kept the same price as 08. Unfortunately a bunch left prior to this change but I guess that's why they did it. The Granary does seem a bit primitive for the money though.

I heard Georgetown had a huge increase. But now they posted on their web site that they will go back to 2008 prices. I know a few people who are coming to Skipjack from Georgetown next season.

Mikee Marina, Still Pond Creek: No electric, no fresh water hook-up, (not much water at MLW either), NO FEES!!! :)
 
I'm a huge fan of Duffy Creek Marina. Not the prettiest place on the bay, but the customer service is top notch. A few years ago I had a slip booked at Skipjack, but managed to sell my boat the same week I put the deposit down. Even with all the paperwork proving I sold my boat that I had to send to them, they still screwed me out of several hundred dollars. This summer at Duffy my son broke his foot the week after I dropped the boat in, which made boating impossible for six weeks. They were totally cool about it, told me I could have my money back, bring the boat back later in the summer, whatever I wanted. Try that at the Skipjack type marinas on the bay.
 
Duffy's is a bit on the "rustic" side but, as alk stated, good folks and very reasonable. Never had a boat slipped there but I did use their service department and would recommend them to anyone. SJC management has a bit of a "nose" problem, as in, its a bit stuck up in the air.
 
Marsha at Duffy Creek is, without a doubt, the nicest, fairest, easiest to deal with marina owner I have ever met. This is the person who, when we had the tow in earlier this year, sent someone over and charged me $43 for the fix. Most marinas charge $43 to write up the bill. She does all of our Volvo Penta work and I don't get an estimate ahead of time. Probably dumb on my part, but in 5 years I have never had an issue. Last year I had her pull the boat to wax the topside. When I picked it up, she said below the rubrail wasn't a big deal, another $50. Most places another $250. (Don't confuse her with her sister, Rhonda, of Outstanding Marine. It's really hard to get me to say something negative. She succeeded. One of the least responsive, least business like pains in the ass to deal with I have ever found.)

What really frosts me about the Granary is they haven't sent anything to say they rescinded the increase. So unless you happen to bitch, you pay the increase. And I guarantee they don't send the extra back. Great customer relations. I'm still thinking of going the Mikee or trailer route. Who needs lots of water?

I know what you mean about the "nose" Mike. That really doesn’t matter to me because I just pay my rent and enjoy the season. One thing you will have to admit, you won't find a prettier marina, awesome view from the pool, and great view of the river on the upper bay. Heck, even the driveway is a beautiful ride.

Agreed on all points. The only marina we've been to that I would rate above SJC for "ambience" is Herrington Harbor South.

I agree about Herrington Harbor South. One of my favorite places.
 
Try joining a Yacht Club. I have been a member of Chesapeake Yacht Club for 13 years and the best part is I get a vote in how the club is run and what rates should be.
