You were so close!!!

Thank you Walter. I was trying to figure out just what rubbing me wrong about this thread..." "The facts are Service Writers are paid an hourly rate + commission." That is it to a "T". The utter effin gall. If I wanted my boat service by Jiffy Lube, I would trailer my boat to Jiffy Lube. WTF?

IMHO, when you structure someone's salary like that, you are forceing them to sell you stuff you don't need, you call it "incentive" I call it being a crook. When I take a boat in for service, I expect the service writter to be honest and tell me what I "really need" not to upsell me because he needs to earn a living. I understand as the service writter you need to do this to earn a living, my complaint or concern is the management that has created this.

It isn’t just boat yards; this happens at most car dealerships to the point that I will only use them now for warrantee work. Every time I bring my jeep to the dealer service department at 7:00AM for a simple inspection or repair, I wait for the 12:00 call with a list of what I need or $hould have. Granted sometimes it may be warranted, but mostly the guy is making a commission on a service that I don’t need, or could wait on.

Getting back to SS3, I mostly had good luck with them. Bruce and Trina took good care of me. But I have to say, I was not happy with their change in policy in my second year of owning my boat that they will not do road service if you were close by. My Passport extended warrantee stated that for many types of repairs that could be done via road service will be done and SS3 refused. It was a pain in the butt to bring the boat to them for a warrantee stereo repair.

Since now most every repair is NOT covered by my Passport extended warrantee, I use other means for service when possible.

Are we talking about allowing other boat mechanics in to the marina to do work, or expecting the marina to allow people to work on their own boats while it is on blocks? Most marinas, including my own, will not allow another mechanic or the boat owner themselves to work on the boat while it is at that marina (either winter storage or in a slip for summer). However, many boat owners at my marina take their boats to other marinas or mechanics for work. The marina must know it, because they have had very little service work this summer, but everyone is still allowed to winter store their boats.

My marina is so tight on the rules that they ran over to our boat one day when my husband was changing the batteries, asking what he was doing, was everything ok? They really wanted to see if he was doing work on the boat (which he often does, just not where they can see him).

Unfortunately, they do poor work, and as previously mentioned, try to sell things people do not need. Last year, at spring launch, we found our boat at the service dock (no phone call or anything from them, it was just there). My husband found a mechanic in the shop, who said they could not start the boat, we needed $1800 in work done. My husband checked, and found a loose wire, that he suspects was deliberately loosened by marina staff. He reattached the wire, and the boat started right up!

Brad is on the money with the car dealership mentality. "Gee sir, you need an injector cleaning and a new air filter and no it is not covered under your service agreement".

My marina in GC allows you to do your own work or to bring in your own mechanic. This has been the case since they have had more work than they could keep up with themselves and it is poor in quality at that. I suspect that may change over time with the new ownership.

Slats, if you are referring to my post, we at the LIYC can have mechanics do minor repairs / tune-ups etc. just as long as they have the various insurances and we report them into the main office. We do not have any marine repair facilities as we are in a country club setting on the water.

The point I was making about SS3/MM was that when I first bought my boat and paid 6K to have an extended 5-6 year warrantee, the policy stated that they would do road calls to your boat to fix various problems that they could. But after a year they told me they only go to boats that are more than X miles away. And I am only a couple of miles away. I had trouble understanding the logic that I would need bring my boat there, arrange for a ride back to my car when it clearly stated that for certain warrantee repairs they would come to me. Other than that issue, I was happy with their service. I know other boaters that had a less satisfied experience.

This is NOT intended to be a Sea Ray bash but if the service is so damn crummy then WHY do you buy Sea Ray?????? I'm sure if sales tanked they would either go under and someone else would rise in their place or they would fix the damn problems they are having. Keep throwing good money after bad and nothing will improve.

If you all look at my previous reply to this topic, you will notice that I have amended it and deleted what was totally inappropriate information for this topic or group. I apologize for having to edit my reply but what I wrote should not have appeared in print in the first place without all of the facts at hand. I wrote it as a knee jerk reaction to an issue that upset me and I as well as it was wrong or me to do so. I truly apologize to those that I may have offended and will be more mindful of the things I write in the future.

Sincerely,
OJ

wow........ I never realized the grip marinas have on boat owners.........not to be able to work on your own boat ???

I would never last in that type of enviroment.

Yup Don, I feel the same way, I am really starting to understand the value of my marina and the value of having your boat docked in your back yard.

Walter

PS
Are these marina owners owned by the same guy, Ben Dover. :)

Walter......The Anchorage has no restrictions....do they ??? Afterall you do OWN the slip.......its like having your boat on your own property.......right ?

Rommer.. Ur question is a very good one. For me I love the layout of the searay. I love the styling. ( interior and exterior ) All of my boats have handled perfectly. Thats why I keep going back.

Rob

Rommer,

Having owned a Regal and a Sea Ray, a great deal comes down to initial cost and a dealer willing to work with you. For the record, marine max is sea ray. Good, bad, or indifferent, it is what it is. It did not used to be that way, then things changed...for the worse...

I went to Mears (sp) Point earlier this year looking for a mid 30's to 40' Regal. I was treated like dog crap when I asked about a trade in. My Regal was "my problem to sell".

Perhaps you made the decision to sell your 28(9?)Regal on your own. Perhaps you were told it was "your problem to sell." I do not know. Frankly, I am tired of boat dealers telling me what is my problem. Car dealers do not. Is my money any less green when I get closer to the water?

I will not deal with a dealer who has no respect for me, my intelligence, or my money. As this is my first dealing with marine max, it is also my last...caveat emptor.

I can say this however, my 330 is very roomy compared to a similar sized Regal.
