I just bought the boat and decided to do routine maintenance. Went to change the impeller in the generator and found its on the backside!!!!how stupid is that???
It gets worse. I pull the old one out(its practically new), and put the new one in. I have a small leak so I reinstall. Bigger leak. Tighten it down good and I crack the PLASTIC impeller housing....#+$:%-%$:#;.
Seriously. Who puts a plastic impeller housing back there.
Any suggestions what I do now? Is it easier to disconnect the two hoses and replace or is there another, easier way?
Also, the cheapest replacement part is 149.00
If anyone knows of an other supplier that's cheaper chime in.

Hmm, 2 days and no responses. This isn't a Carver issue just because your kohler genset happens to be in a Carver Hull. If you post this in the engine forum, you'll get a lot more reads and possibly an answer.

Last year I spent two days replacing the impeller on my Onan genset on our 3207. Should normally take about half an hour, but no.... For access to the impeller housing (really just a little metal cup about as big as the cup they use for melted butter with your lobster in a restaurant) you have to do quite a bit of dismantling. Then there's one hex head, Phillips housing screw that is so inaccessible to a straight line screwdriver or nut driver that I finally had to buy a quarter inch drive, double-articulated mini ratchet to reach and tighten that last hex head.

If I ever meet the engineer or designer who made that routine maintenance item such a ridiculous ordeal, I'd spit in his beer.

I feel there should be a special place in Hell for those engineers where they have to spent eternity working on all the crap they've designed.

I feel your pain. We also have a 350 Mariner That is 1 job that I give to our local mechanic because it's such a pain to change. I have him do it every season as insurance because if it goes bad while out on the water, i'm not sure I can even get it done right. He does it all by feel since it's in such a crappy spot.

Sounds like it ranks right up there with the RWC pumps on a Mercruiser.
