I'm looking at a rare duck. They tell me only 6 were made. It is a 2001 Mariner with Cummins 4B Diamond diesels.

Anyone have any comments good or bad?

Also does anyone know if Carver used dripless shaft seals that year?

Let 'er rip guys!

Good question, Greg. Kenny, any ideas on this one???

I'll have to check...that's about the time they switched over

I think I just answered my own question. I looked at Pete's post and the Carver brochure. It says, dripless shaft logs, so there we go. I wonder what kind?

Still this is a rare boat. The newer ones have Yanmars, what few are diesel powered. I'm just sort of curious why they switched to Yanmar from Cummins unless it has something to do with Cummins teaming up with Mercruiser a few years ago. Cummins are just flat bullet proof, except for the early Sherwood pump from what I can read.

they used Tides when they first started...not sure what they use now

A 4B is a small engine. I'm curious to hear about consumption and performance.

I had heard that the diesels on the Mariner would make a little vibration? I was considering buying a diesel model a few years ago? This was a salesman saying it?

Well they are 250 hp diesels, so they are putting out close to the same power as the gasser equiped Mariners, so I don't see a problem there. According to Cummins, 10.9 gph/engine WOT

Art, I'm sure compared to a V-8 there is more vibration, it is a 4 cylinder diesel. A 4 cylinder is always more vibration that a V-8. With the kind of fuel consumption I think we are looking at here, a little vibration may be tolerable. We fired them up at the dock, I have not sea trialed it yet and they seemed fine, but we did not turn the props.

GeeBee, I would guess you'd get great MPG with that boat? I think most don't opt for the diesels because of the cost difference on the entry model? I always liked the boat especially the 36 Mariner years (I think 2004 & later). Has an extra large bridge area that can pack in a crowd in comfort. Easy access to lines & fenders for all alone boating, a front seat for a lazy cruise...but I'm sure you know the good stuff. Very people friendly boat.

Diesel on Lanier? You couldn't get it last I was there. Of course I have married off a daughter who was still in a car seat the last time I was near Lanier!

Bald Ridge and Holiday both have diesel.

Maybe, maybe not. I'm a little sour on the idea but warming up to it. I just don't like to spend money I guess.

The 4B engines are long lasting when slightly underpropped so you can exceed rated rpm at WOT by 5%
The sherwood pump is the weak link so I carry a spare. Tony Athens at Seaboard Marine is now selling a SeaMax pump of his own design to replace it when needed, straight swap out.
I wonder how they run with JetA?

Thanks for the advice Gary. Yes I've heard about the Sherwood pumps, and I'll keep an eye on that issue. JetA? I don't know!! I know that a lot of guys at the hangar with Powerstrokes and Durmax trucks run on the waste Jet A they drain from the planes when they have to do tank work. The company saves the cost of disposing of it, and the guys get free fuel. They tell me they fill with a filter funnel and they add Stanadyne Lubricity formula at double the recommended dosage and so far no problems. I don't think they will let me transport some Jet A off the property though;)

well- what's the scoop greg- did you get a new ride and not tell us??? :)
