I have a 1998 Carver Mariner and the fridge (Norcold DE561)went bad. This model has been discontinued, and I understand the Norcolds now made in Mexico have a terrible service record. Has anyone had to replace theirs and what did you replace it with?

If you don't need the 12 VDC side, consider a dorm fridge. At $125, it's a 3 year throwaway. In that the gennie is the first thing started and last thing shut down, lot's of folks I know are going this route. If you have no gennie, an inverter will work underway. As long as you limit openings after shutting down the engines, the rest is not that big a deal.

HTH.

We have been told by numerous service people that the Demetic and Norcold refrigerators have nothing but trouble. They are making them cheaper to cut costs and as a result, they are nothing but trouble and not recommended. The only other choice does not fit through the door of the boat, and is three inches deeper than the cavity. I think u can buy a new compressor for $1100(not 100% sure yet if they are still available), and the whole frige is $1150. Not sure yet what the solution is. Even the model of Norcold that replaces the original does not fit the cavity, and will have to adapted, what were they thinking?

I like the Nova Kool refrigerators...made in Canada, easy to get parts for from them and they make replacement sizes for most of the Norcolds. My Norcold, which is still running after 22 years was made in Japan...when did they move production to Mexico?

We replaced our nevercold with a new Tundra 5 years ago. It is REAL quiet, keeps plenty cold, and uses about 1/2 the electricity of the nevercold. I did need to cut out the opening just a tad, maybe 1/4" or so if I remember. Otherwise, a very easy swap. I think we paid about $1400. Using a dorm fridge and inverter is also a good idea, and a lot less money.

Tundra is no longer. Great product but they do not sell it anymore.

Too bad.

I like the term "Nevercold", I hope we do not have problems with the one we were just forced to order due to dimensions of the opening! My "Nevercold" on my last boat was still working strong after 22 years, but they were made in the USA then. A good replacement if you have the room is the Vitrifrigo, it is the "Tundra" under another name. Wonderful warranty, service record and according to local service dealers, a joy to service and to deal with the company. They are also larger than most as they used a different material that was not as thick. We did not have the room for it, but it was our first choice.

+1 on the NovaKool. I replaced the same model Norcold on my Mariner three years ago with a NovaKool, and it's still running great.
I had to slightly modify the opening, but it fits very nicely where the old one used to. There are two things I like best about it. One is the freezer compartment is on the bottom, and secondly the fridge now has a light!

Good luck,
Frank

I have a 1996 370 Motoryacht with a Norcold DE360 AC/DC refrigerator. Up until last week it was working when plugged in but not on battery. Now, it doesn't work either way and need help as far as what to do. I know from the Norcold website that this model is discontinued. Can it be repaired? I've read that this sized unit is very difficult to remove from the boat and is equally as difficult to replace. I believe this is a 7.1 cu ft-pretty big. What are my options?

Depends on the configuration. A friend has a seperate fridge and freezer side by side in his 3(6 or 8)0 in 2 compartments. I don't know if is was a custom job or not. Sharp setup.
