I went to dinner the other night to Mathews Restaurant. The owner and Dock boy ( not Dockmaster) could not be more rude and arrogant. Combine that with overpriced terrible food.
I just feel I need to let others know so there evening is not ruined like ours.
I was tieing up my boat. We had both sterns tied, 1 spring, and I was pulling the other spring with my wife doing bow lines. This is when the Dock boy starts repeatedly yelling at me to restart my engines to hold boat off the dock. Boat was not touching dock. There was no wind, no current, no other boats around. I had a boat load of adults.
I told him to STFU. The boat was secure. He tried to throw me out. Saying your done,go away.
Unknown to him the owners family members were on board my boat.They told him to get Cosmo the owner.
Cosmo came and told me my boat was the Dock boys responsibility.. and I disrrepected him.
Asked if I would talk to Police Officer that way.
We are talking about a 16 yo kid.
I informed Cosmo I never give up responsibility of my boat. The only reason he would not throw me out this time was his family on board.
The family members were shocked how we were treated to say the least.
My wife and I went there 5 yrs ago and were treated very much the same. We swore we would never return. These family members said no go, it must have a bad day the last time. Thinking we are with the family it would be a much different experience. I guess I was wrong.
 
Very strange, I've never had anything but a good meal and good experience there
 
I am not sure why you felt the need to tell a 16 year old kid to STFU. Seems there are other less abusive ways to tell him you have it under control.
 
Some dock hands are dumb. We pulled into Molly Malones today. Kids comes over and starts petting the dog on the boat while I did the ropes.
When I was done he looked to help. Hello. It's done. Granted the same kid that does the dock is a valet for cars.
But he was useless.
 
On the same note Dave, I have had young kids that were excellent dock hands and were a huge help. Some places that come to mind, MYC, Townsend, West Hampton town dock, Town dock at ocean beach and Flyns. I am sure there have been others also.

Some of these kids I have had help me were pretty dam awesome, others were fair, but all really wanted to help.
 
The kid was on a power trip that was being reinforced by the owner.
The attitude comes from the people above him.

You should have asked when " Cosmo came and told me my boat was the Dock boys responsibility "....

Does the dock boy have a captains license and liability insurance to take control of my boat ???
 
Again, for every good dock hand, there is a dumb one.
Haverstraw came to mind.
We pulled in.
Threw 2 dock hands ropes.
They tied them super loose to a floating dock.
Next thing we know we floated 15' away from the dock.

At flynns I had a strong East wind with bow pointing east pushing me into dock when I went to leave.
Dock hand came on and took charge.
Asked me to start motors and get at helm.
He undid the bow lines.
Told me to put one motor in gear to hold me off dock.
He had 2 guys untie back lines but hold them tight.
He undid spring lines.
Told me to go into neutral then jumped off and pushed off at the same time I went they threw lines in boat. I then heard "go" and I went. All worked well.

Oh, note to other Captians. I tip dock hands before they do lines. Why? Well exactly the above reason, there is no time to tip sometimes. Plus they feel more responsible then. Some may think the opposite.
 
To Walter's list of very good dock hands I would add Brewer Capri in Port Washington. They are fantastic.
 
I have been to many different Brewer marinas. The dock hands have all been professional, helpful and pleasant.
 
Sad but funny thing. The owner says to me the dock boy has to be responsible because he doesn't want any
more law suites. He said he has 12 pending right now. So either he needs a new dock boy or better attorney.
Other docks I frequent have signs dock at your own risk. I asked a dockmaster at a nearby dock if he had the
same problem with law suites. He laughed and said no.
 
Was at Flynn's earlier this week, the Dock Master Brian was one of the best I have ever seen. To echo CurrentSea, I watched him a number of times jump on board and take the helm and on another he went and brought the boat out to the the entrance for the couple who were leaving - they were waiting at the end of the dock. Oh, and a nice personality to add.

Although I did not dock at Matthews, I was there last Wednesday night. Food was great, service not so.
 
Flynn's dockmasters are some of the best I've actually experienced. there was a guy Gerard there for years, golden.

How did he get back to the dock, swim?
 
In all my years going to many places on FI, I would never categorize the food as "Great" Good and Okay, sure. Will say I have never had "bad". As an example of why not great: If I get a steak, fish, clams, etc in FI and it was as good as the main land but twice the price, that IMHO makes it OK or Good, certainly not great. I get why it costs more on FI and it is what it is. Just saying (no pun intended) never had a meal there the "rocked my boat" :)
With that said though, with my recent trip to London and Paris, FI in comparison is awesome in price and food!!!
 
Right on the money, Walter. I had some Good food at the Mermaid this past Monday, taking advantage of the half-priced entree offer on that day. For that money, it is acceptable. I am just back from Paris in July and you are also correct with that. Everything costs a fortune!
 
This could get interesting but point well taken, a dining experience is relative. A meal that is of good value can be more enjoyable than a meal that is just better tasting. To that, I think I had their dinner special which was only $19.95(or maybe that was a wine speacial) either way I walked out of there after dinner and drinks for 4(2 kids) for just slightly more that I pay to fill up the tank in my SUV. Me happy :)
 
Was at the channel club this weekend, just got home.Other than the long 5mph trip down the river to get there, really loved the place. Tiki bar food was good, and for the money with the atmosphere, it was "great".
Dockmaster Dave, was real nice, they were a bit shorthanded (kids going back to college), so the wait to get in the slip took some time. Meet Bill from the hudson and a few others. Great Labor Day weekend. Sorry I missed you Dave.
 
Walter it was very nice meeting you along with Dave and Lou. The Channel club is a really great destination. Hope to see you all again soon......
