There's been a lot of discussion about Mayberry Slough but for the life of me, I don't think I have been there. I have been almost everywhere on the old swamp but not there. Thought I was there once years ago, but it turned out to be Whiskey Slough (since gotten much nicer) Where exactly is the place and can a guy tie up there for free....a little attempt at humor. But really, where exactly is it located.

Mayberry Slough is just west of the Antioch Bridge, north of the channel. There are both a slough and a cut named "Mayberry".

I found it..! on my chart it is about 1 mile west of the Antioch Bridge. Is there a Yacht club there....? Will I find good food, music and spirts there...? Is there also have dockside power provided there...?

27 ft. express cruiser.

There are no facilities in Mayberry Slough except for the alleged meth labs, white slavers and insurance pirates. Nearest are the Antioch marinas just across the water at Antioch or the Antioch bridge. Eddo's is in Gallagher Slough. That's up the San Joaquin along Sherman Island.

Another black mark for Mayberry - in addition to having to look at the garbage dump, now someone is stealing the lines I have on the bank. Maybe our resident squatter is panning to seel them with cans to the recycler.

It was a beautiful little slough that splits into two parts just after it turns west. Then some SOB hauled in a bunch of lash barges and polluted the view. A few years back, someone torched them, but didn't finish them off. We were left with a lovely view of half-burned hulks. Then, after a couple of years, he hauled new barges in with mobile homes on top of them, along with a sunken crane and a half-submerged boat. Last year he managed to haul in an old motor home and placed it inside one of the burned out shells. It's an absolute disgrace to the Delta, and the authorities seem to care less about this polluting eyesore.

The waters are owned by the state with local [county] jurisdiction over law enforcement. He is in Sacramento County which is still working on its version of a liveaboard enforcement ordinance.

You see many derelict boats in the Delta, but most of these are anchored out in the water and clearly under state jurisdiction. But since these are tied up to his land, maybe there's a loophole here?

Yes, right now there is a loophole. That will probably be closed by the new ordinance. Do you know who owns the land around Mayberry?

I have no idea. Someone with all that land should be pretty well off so it strikes me as odd that they would want to live amongst or be associate with squatters.

Irrespective of whether or not one can tie up to the land, I think it is quite illegal to turn the slough into a garbage dump, but neither the Sheriff or Coasties are interested. They'd much rather board my boat to make sure I have my oily waste plaque mounted correctly.

For what it's worth, a guy at my marina told me he talked to the guy who 'owns' that mess 2 weeks ago (he keeps a couple small boats in our marina). He says the crane that is now in the water was on land but the land flooded - not his fault. I say bulls#%rb2@gr5t. I've been buzzing around that slough for almost 4 years and the first time I saw that crane it was in the water - not on land. I haven't talked to him myself - don't even want to go there - but I'd sure love to see that place cleaned up. It used to be great place to drop hook for the day. Close to home, didn't take much gas to get there and back and, unlike the cut, wasn't spoiled by the skiiers going back and forth incessantly. Ahhhhh .... but for the good old days!

So, manticore, how's the new boat? where do you like to drop hook these days?

The new boat is great, thanks for asking! Most weekends have been spent cleaning something or other so we've not done much relaxing on hook yet. We've done some cruising around a bit and have gone to Caliente for opening day, but not much else. The plan is to get the 'heavy' work done before the hot weather sets in so we can just enjoy the summer. Since Mayberry has become such a slum we're on the hunt for good place to hang out where the water skiiers . Hopefully some place close since gas prices are so crazy!

How has your boat been since you had the work done on it?

Absolutely - that crane was half-sunk from day one. We're still toughing it out, since no one ever comes through - we reversed the direction we tie up so we don't have to look at the dump site now.

Glad you are happy with your new boat. I like your plan to get her in ship shape before the hot weather hits! My boat is operational, but still needs some things done to her. I've got a lot going on at home right now which is taking a priority on my time!

I haven't done much anchoring over in your neck of the woods, but I have spent some nice time anchored in Montezuma Slu. No gas docks, so no water skiers back then. That may have changed since it has been quite awhile........I bet there are others who can suggest some quiet places nearby.
