Back when the Giant's new park first opened, we spent a few games anchored in McCovey Cove. Due to so many nimrod skippers, I found it to be too much of a hassle, so I never went back.

I recall later hearing that powerboats were banned from the cove, but as I am watching today's game against the A's on TV (and previous games as well), I see both large and small powerboats in the cove. Am I mistaken? Did they ban the powerboats or not? Or is there just a small section where they are prohibited?

I do miss seeing the water dogs that would shag the homerun balls... [:-baseball]

Thanks Getakey! Makes sense. It was a fiasco before they initiated the rules. Someone was gonna get hurt! (and probably was)

Giants won, 5-2 and avoided the big bad broom.

yeah - who would thought that their pitching would be letting them down

The first time we cruised over to the cove we didn't see a single home run......probably because it was in January. We did radio the marina next door to see if they had some guest docking. They were very nice, we pulled into an empty slip, walked over to Mo Mo's and had a great lunch. I think the cove and the crazies in it add to the whole atmosphere of the game. I wonder how some of the folks in inner tubes and kyaks find there way home at ten o'clock at night

Maybe they spend the night in cove....possibly passed out??? Actually, I suspect they have a power boat for transportation to and fro.....

One of the first times I cruised into McCovey cove, one of my guests mooned the crowd. He did it before I knew what he was doing. Fortunately, it was before the wide spread use of smartphones and it never showed up on youtube

By the way, he was around 60 yrs old, so not sure if people even looked

We anchor their quite often. It is a great spot during a game as you feel the energy of the crowd. It is also fun as the TV is delayed about 10 seconds so when you hear the crowd you can make some guesses what just happened. You will generally need satellite TV to actually watch the game, but the radio is also great to keep up with what is happening. The bottom is a mixture of mud and rock, my anchor doesn't set well on a rock bottom so it sometimes takes me a couple of tries to set the hook. The wind generally blows in the cove so you will want to make sure your BBQ does well in windy conditions. The further you go into the cove the more crowded it gets. We will often anchor right off the statute across the cove to have a bit more room around us. Just be sure to not get to close to the shore there as there is some concrete and rebar visible there at low tide.

We were there on the Sunday over Memorial weekend and the Coast Guard came though and boarded most of the boats that were anchored. I haven't seen them board boats in the cove before. They were onboard about 20 minutes, gave me a copy of the checklist and were on their way. They were friendly and I am sure enjoyed watching the game on TV while completing the paper work.

Here is a picture anchored near the statue.

It's a great place to spend the afternoon.

Thanks for the awesome pic, (and info) kgd!

It's probably about time that I enjoy a game from the Cove once again.

Play ball! [:-baseball]

Oh, I forgot to ask.

What about the water dogs? Do they still have them there too?

A former co=worker of mine owned one, but never took it to the Cove.

He was an A's fan...

That's hilarious! [:-propeller]

Were you playing, "Blue Moon" over the stereo??? :D

The closest that I ever came to mooning anyone was way back when my brother and I skied in the Frozen Bun Run and he wore those plastic "buns" with the wording, "Frozen Bun Run" written on them.

He (not me) made the cover of the Bethel Island Beacon. Hal Schell was there and took some pics as well (as he was keeping an eye out for my mom- see the Lost Isle thread for the scoop on that one! :D ).

Good times!!! [:-bonc01]
