Mercruiser raw water 1998 engine. My over temp alarm would come on at about 2800 RPM so I removed my thermostat housing today for inspection. I had previously replaced the elbows and exhaust manifolds within a couple of years so I know they are good. Anyway, The thermostat housing has moderate to heavy corrosion in and outside and the thermostat sleeve does not want to come out so I assume I have no choice but to replace the housing. The best price I can find for the Merc 860256A4 is $290! Does anyone know of a cheaper source or how to extract a stuck sleeve? The best price I found was at nuwavemarine. Thanks all

If it is cast iron dilute muriatic acid will dissolve rust . not for aluminum

I saw that Sierra stainless part but dismissed it because I thought the description of 1989 referred to the Merc year and not the part number! It looks like the only difference is there is no shoulder for the bolts, which means I need shorter bolts. That being said, I'm surprised the stainless part is cheaper than the cast iron one. At $100 less, I think I'll try it. The worse that can happen is, well, I waste my money or have to return it.

you use sleeves for the oem bolts if you prefer.black iron gas pipe cut to size
