Can anyone refer me to a good reliable mobile marine mechanic who is mercruiser certified. The issues Im having with my boat are minor but without a reliable person to fix it the problem just lingers.

Im trying my best to work with a marine mechanic now but he doesnt deliver. He was to diagnose the issue, provide a quote and time frame to repair it.

He identified the problem as the fuel pump..got a new fuel pump..installed it wrong. First time out on the boat the engine quit when I brought it up to plane. THe brand new fuel pump stopped pumping. So he had to come out AGAIN and fix it right..wouldve been nice to have fixed it right on the first try.

So he fixes the fuel pump. I test the boat and it planes fine. I bring it back and the engine quits when trying to dock at low idle. Restarts but quits again. This after a mechanic just worked on the boat???

So now he is out to fix the boat again. Tells me the boat will be fixed on Monday. Well folks its THursday..now the port engine works fine..but the starboard engine which was previously fine is showing symptoms the port engine previously had? Did he just swap parts??? Now he wont respond to calls or text messages at all.

Grrr. I will reveal the name of this mechanic for all to avoid if I dont hear back from him soon.

How can a Fuel Pump be installed wrong? I mean......it DID work after the installation....then went south...Fuel Pumps either are working or they aren't. Is yours a mechanical pump or electric?
If Electric....the wires either feed juice to it and it pumps....or the wires are backwards and it doesn't pump in which case it wouldn't have started to begin with. If mechanical....it's two bolts and two lines and the arm that goes under the cam lobe....Here again...the bolts will only go in if it's in it's proper location.....and the arm to the Cam Lobe will either be under the Lobe or it'll snap when you first crank it in which case it won't start anyways.
Please enlighten us as to why you think it was installed "wrong"...???

Disregard the response to your first e-mail. I did not see this second e-mail. Jason Feliz is the mechanic I would recommend and he is Mercruiser certified. His cell is 510-314-7641. His rates are lower than Marine Max fetched, not cheap, but he is as good as they get.

Another excellent Merc Certified guy is Matt Toly at Pacific Boat Center, 925-684-3510. He is very knowledgeable and honest, but I don't know if he is willing to travel to your area from Bethel Island. But times are tough right now and it is worth a phone call.

I think your current mechanic may be either working while using a substance or he is causing more problems to get more $$$ out of you. The fact the he seems to have disappeared makes think substance abuser. Time to move on.......

Thank you for those referrals. I will give them a call. Im assuming they are mobile. Do you know if they work in the Martinez area?

A fuel pump is installed incorrectly when it does not perform its function after installation which was the case.

OR....The replacement pump was already faulty at the time of replacement
in which case the Pump itself would be to blame and not the installation.

Wayne,

Another firm that does good relaible work, but I don't think are mobile is the Outboard Motor Shop in Oakland. Despite their name, they have done work on my I/O's and have been competitive, honest and reliable.

Someone please explain to me how a Fuel Pump can be installed "wrong" yet still allow the engine to start hence it would be pumping fuel.

Thanks Bill. I called a few mechanics but Jason Feliz was the only one to call me back. He will be coming out to my boat tomorrow to diagnose the issue with the starboard engine. I will definitely let you know how things go. Hopefully I can get these boat issues resolved for a reasonable price so I can get back to enjoying the boat.

Wayne, here I have to believe that nothing was wrong with the fuel pump if it was replaced and semi worked after the repair. Either they work or don't and it's pretty hard to put one on wrong, they either work or they don't in most cases.

My guess is you have a fuel supply problem, I would immediately replace the water separator and inspect the inside of the old one. Is the fuel coming from a shared tank or a dedicated tank? is the pickup line in the tank in good condition? Are all the fuel lines in good condition? If you have eliminated the tank, water separator, lines and pump the only thing left is the carb. Someone really needs to install a fuel pressure gauge on the output side of your fuel pump to check the pressure at idle and under way at several RPM ranges to determine if the fuel flow is sufficient.

This should really be an easy fix!!!

Hi Gnarly! Happy Holidays!!!

I think Wayne's engines are fuel injected, so some of your info will not apply......

it was a holiday week, most techs were away and shops closed

the fuel pump can not be installed wrong, sounds like a bad pump out of the box, especially if it is a non-oem part
