Looking to have a major service done on my Alpha Gen 2 outdrives - bellows, shift cables, impellers. The boat's in my driveway. Was contemplating doing it all myself, but not sure I'm up to it physically.

Anyone have personal experience with a good mobile mechanic in my area?

I will email you the name of someone named Chuck.
Don't want to post here in public forum.
He is out of Copaigue area.
Great guy.

Chuck is the best mechanic around, mobile or otherwise, and a great guy too.

Hard to beat 'kudos' like that. Yeah, let let me know how to reach him. I'm ready to get on his calendar.

Thanks!

I sent u a email from here
He sometimes is busy and wont' take new work.

Never received your e-mail. I checked my profile here and it's correct, so I don't know what the issue is.

Thanks again.

Dave, received your e-mail. Thanks for the help!

FYI, I spoke with Chuck this morning and went over what I would like to have done. He's coming to the house next Wednesday to pull the drives and take a look at what's needed. He didn't/wouldn't try to 'ballpark' the job for me until he pulls both drives and checks them out. I think it's gonna be kind of pricey, but I also spoke with him about possibly doing one drive this year and one next if the price will break the budget.

My port drive was pulled last year when I had an engine replaced, and the (yard) mechanic said that things looked 'okay'. My starboard drive got really loud around last August and needs an exhaust bellow, so I'll concentrate on that one first if need be.

I will say he seemed like a good guy on the phone, and genuinely flattered when I told him about the recommendations he received here.

Now that I am out of warranty I may start using him again
So be sure to name drop my name.
Thanks.

Drop mine(John)too!
Whatever price he quotes you, you can be sure that it is fair and honest.
After Don's recommendation, he handled my re-power for me, along with some other stuff over the last few years.
His son is a great kid too.
When they work on your boat, they treat it as if it's their own.

Can't say enough good about Chuck. I've used him on all my boats since the late 90's. First time he worked in my engine room he covered my rugs with drop cloths and wore plastic booties over his shoes. He is probably one of the most honest and fair guys you will come across in the boating business. After I sold my last boat and bought my Motorhome ......I had him do all the service work on that too. He really knows his stuff. Wish he would move to Florida.....we need someone like him down here.

Anyone see's Chuck.....tell him Don said " Hello "........

All you guys who recommended Chuck were SO right!

He showed up on time and he and son C.J. are hard at work on my drives right now. Chuck showed me that my bellows are actually in pretty good shape and don't need to be replaced for awhile. What he did find (and he showed me every component):

Starboard drive - The exhaust tube was a little deformed at the transom end, which probably contributed to the exhaust noise. Gimbal bearing is shot, not because the bellow is bad but because a 'sealing ring' wasn't seated properly and allowed some water seepage. U joint is okay.

Port Drive - no issues found.

So, they're replacing the gimbal bearing and exhaust tube as we speak, and servicing the water pumps. Chuck found a transom housing bolt that needs to be replaced, so they're gonna do that. They're cleaning everything up as they go and will complete the job today.

I'll tell you honestly that he could've banged me for a bunch more money and parts without me being any the wiser. IMO, these are some genuinely nice, honest guys who know their s**t. I'm very pleased.

Thank you all!

Glad your experience with Chuck was a good one. One thing I know for sure....he would NEVER do work that wasn't needed and charge for it.

Another thing about Chuck is he will never talk bad about any of his customers.....Its just the way he is.

Glad you were happy, and it all worked out!
Both Chuck and CJ are genuinely nice guys, who by coincedence, also happen to be top notch mechanics.
Whenever I have any dealings with them, I feel more like I'm dealing with friends, rather than a typical customer/mechanic relationship.

Same here. We shot the breeze while they worked; I made us all a pot of coffee, we talked about people we both know, about Sandy, insurance companies and raising kids. After they left I realized I actually had a pretty good time, and learned some stuff about outdrives to boot. :-)

Used Chuck today and was very happy with his work. I am usually very hands on with my boat but deferred some of the stuff I would usually do to him. Highly recommend him.

He is in the middle of doing some mechanical stuff for me now.
Some of which I would normally do, but can't because of other things that are going on.
What a great guy!
