Had a chance to bang around between Lock 7 on the Mohawk down to the Hudson yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Mohawk looked like chocolate milk - it is always that brown? Hudson was just blasting through due to all the rain. Question is: Riverbed II is a trailorable 22 foot I/O cuddy - would it be worthwhile to haul it on over there and spend three or four days exploring?
Thanks for the thoughts -
Steve

I'd say Champlain, the finger lakes section of the Erie, or perhaps Onieda would be better. With the Champlain system you can go north or south for some canal action. We have not done the north canal but we've heard it's scenic. The south end is where you have Vergenes etc..

I like the upper Hudson/Mohawk as much as anybody, but I dont know if I'd tow from Maine, to do a few day trip on a 22'er here.
Also, FWIW, there is a large scale PCB dredging/remediation project going on about 20 miles or so upstream, so if swimming is your thing, you may want to reconcider. If you want to do a trip to this area I'd recommend Lake George, as they have numerous islands/secluded areas to explore, and the water is pristine. Good luck either way.

If you're into canals, there is nothing wrong with that section of the Erie - in fact its fascinating. I expected that stretch to be all industrial and commercial, and instead its beautiful and scenic - much of the area between Locks 6 and 7 comprises a wildlife refuge...

I would put my 22' into that section for a few days for sure - hopefully when the weather settles down so the water isnt that fast moving, chocolate brown crap you referred to. Usually its more scenic and tranquil than that!!!

As for other alternatives, sure Lake George would be terrific - we did that last year - but again its a different type of boating and can ironically be rather crowded on summer weekends depending on where you go. Champlain is awesome too - big, open, and best of all, UN-crowded...

So its all a matter of taste...

PS - the dredging on the Hudson is not upstream from the Mohawk, so the PCB thing shouldnt be a factor (if it is anyway)... Unless I am mistaken and there is dredging on the Mohawk too, but I hadnt heard of that...

Thanks for the input guys! Where we were, around 7, it seemed that it could be really nice, given the right conditions. The current was crazy with all the storm runoff and I was amazed that there wasn't more debris coming downstream. I've got some friends with boats in the area so I may just end up hitching a ride with them rather than schlepping the cuddy across the mountains of Vermont. Again, thanks for the info!
Cheers -
