I've had Montego 3257 1987 for 5 years. Has mercs 454, I like the exhaust noise, however my wife, kids, and neighbors do not. Has anyone modified existing mufflers or installed new cans? And did this reduce noise.
Cap.
I've got pretty much the same setup as you with my 86 Mariner. In later years, Carver went to waterlift mufflers which were much quieter than the thru-hull exhausts and small inline mufflers. I'll be interested in hearing what other RO's have to say on this subject.
That's interesting, your neighbors are complaining about your exhaust noise on a Montego??? What would happen if a Checkmate parked next to them instead???
I've pondered the same issue with my 3257. My 1987 model came with Dapars, which don't do a whole lot of good. Any waterlift muffler would take up a lot of useful engine room space and probably require reloacating the water heater on the starboard side. I am currently considering a tail-pipe baffle insert. It's supposed to drop sound levels by 4-6 db, and cost $90-$120 per pair.
