It's probably more talk and BS, but you never know

http://suffolktimes.timesreview.com...ine-industry-revitalization-advisory-council/

From Newsday.

The Suffolk County Legislature voted Tuesday to create a Marine Industry Revitalization Advisory Council to boost an industry “decimated" by superstorm Sandy and in urgent need of skilled workers, dredging of waterways and water quality watchdogs.

The measure, sponsored by Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory (D-Copiague), goes on to Suffolk Executive Steve Bellone, who Gregory said is expected to sign it. A Bellone spokesman said the county executive was “reviewing the bill."

The council, which will have no budget, will bring together government officials, educational leaders, tourism advocates, environmentalists and private industry to tackle problems facing the $1.6 billion Suffolk marine industry.

Gregory said the committee will work to make sure there's “always public access" to waterways, that dredging work is conducted to keep waterways accessible, there's an adequate number of “boat mechanics" and other workers and that efforts to promote the industry in Suffolk continue.

Marine industry executives say the council is necessary. From 2006 to 2016, registrations for vessels with motors dropped 20 percent on Long Island, Newsday has reported.

“A lot of marinas are getting sold to developers" after superstorm Sandy “decimated our industry," said Eric Kreuter, general manager of Moriches Boat & Motor in East Moriches, who expects to sit on the council.

The council will seek technical assistance from federal and state agencies, environmental organizations and workforce development experts to buoy the industry.

The council will have county legislative representatives and county labor, public works and economic development staffers.

No budget probably means no real power or input.

No budget = get together at bar and talk BS.
Let's form our own committee, sounds like fun!

BTW, drop in registrations is probably due to the fact that more and more people don't register boats. Most boats bought since Sandy came from out of state and most people don't register because that means paying the sales tax. I delayed 3 years but finally registered. Cost me almost $20K to register my boat, hence the reason most people don't!!

I felt that after Sandy they should of made a change to allow people who had boats lost in Sandy get credit. I bought my boat in 2008 and paid $20K in sales tax then, then in 2012 I replaced that boat and had to pay $20K again. Sales tax is a scam on boats in NY because unless you can trade it in, sales tax is paid on top of sales tax so the same boat could generate a sales tax payment multiple times.

RE:NYS sales tax on boats
In 2015 New York capped its sales taxes on yachts, buyers of yachts in the Empire State will pay tax on only the first $230,000 of the purchase price — or in most counties, 8.25 percent or $18,975.
Still Sux

Guess that's good for you? I was just a tad under that both times. So still almost $20k. Besides sales tax you pay registration fee.

The good news is they let you pay with a credit card, so I got 2% back of the charge! Got me half a tank of fuel! LOL!

There are games you can play, like register in a non-tax state, but then there are rules and you have to prove visitation if caught.

I went 3 years un-registered but documented, mostly because I thought I might sell the boat. But once I was firm on this, I broke down and registered.

Boat is like a home, yet we don't pay sales tax on homes?

It's all a dog and pony show because of mid term elections. They will add it to the long list of broken and unfulfilled promises they make. The roads are a mess but yet the street sweeper was by the other day sweeping pot holes and making a bigger mess than before he showed up. I know people who can't leave their canals unless it's high tide. I agree it's all a bunch of BS!

The tax cap helps me a little. I'll be paying it Via Amex, as well as i put the slip & all fuel costs on card. The points keep stacking up. As you said the good side of all the cost

I bought from MarineMax in Ct. and offerered to go to the DMV down here in NY to pay the sales tax. I wanted to put it on my 2% cash back credit card. They told me they weren’t allowed to do that, and that they had to collect the NYS sales tax since they have retail locations in NY.
They did let me put the deposit for the boat on the credit card, but it wasn’t nearly as much as the sales tax was.
