This makes me think about going north on the river to get away from the contamination. They say its at a safe level. Do we really know that!

The Indians called the Hudson, Muh-he-kun-ne-tuk, "the river that flows both ways".

How far North do you want to go???

Jonathan

"They say its at a safe level. Do we really know that!"

Sure you do, if you pee in the dark and it lights up the room, then thats safe. If you pee in the dark and you need sunglasses then it is not safe. :)

Walter

I dont know Jonathan, seems like a constant worry about that plant. We so much enjoy hanging out at Croton Point. Its just the worry about the water in that area.

Walter, I really don't want to see any light if you know what i mean. It just keeps you wondering if its really safe.

Walter we need a test that works for men and women. The girls always pee into the dark and porcelain isn't transparent.

I trust you don't eat bananna's or have any granite in your home, Al - both are radioactive.

Obviously, there are safe levels of radioactive isotopes in our daily lives, based on reasonable assumptions. But of course, assmptions are based on knowledge (local political decisions NOT withstanding), and as you can see, the knowledge part of that article is, well, missing . . . so the obvious conclusion is to, 'Assume the worse.'

Well, if you have someone that continually lies to you, wouldn't you assume the worst also? Personally, I'd like to see IP replaced with a modern reactor coupled with a plan for the spent fuel. The spent fuel is what worries me the most.

I'm not sure it's actually 'lying', Chris - the nuke industry is behind the 8-ball. Radiaion and contamination are technical issues - most folk live in a talking-point based world, and "don't have time" for the details.

Doing a quick internet search -
The radioactive decay product of tritium is a low energy beta that cannot penetrate the outer dead layer of human skin. Therefore, the main hazard associated with tritium is internal exposure.

Strontium-90, a radioactive isotope of strontium, is a common product of nuclear explosions. It has a half-life of about 28.8 years and decays into yttrium-90 through beta decay. Strontium-90 is especially deadly since it has a relatively long half-life, is strongly radioactive and is absorbed by the body, where it accumulates in the skeletal system. The radiation affects the production of new blood cells, which eventually leads to death.

Notice that strontium is also a beta emitter, which cannot penetrate dead skin - it's the internal threat that counts here.

bottom line - So type of radiation doesn't penetrate clothing or dead skin, so swimming (or showers) in water with detectible quantities are not considered health risks. Apparently, only those who drink a couple of hundred gallons Hudson river water from the Indian Point area, in a short period of time, may have a possibility of health problems in the future . . ..(I hope that sounds as stupid when it's read, as it did when I wrote it!)

First of all they've been complaining of all these isotopes for years. Remember Alec Baldwin's celebrated visit??? Second, Noreen O'Donnell is a screwy left wing activist. Thirdly, I'd be more worried about the $h!t they've been pumping into the Hudson for a few weeks now, followed closely by the $h!t that these Goshdamned geese leave behind all over my marina that our kids play in. Finally, Ms. O'Donnell is wrong that Indian Point's foibles make the case for NUCLEAR POWER tenuous. They make the case for keeping open a 50 YEAR OLD CRUMMY NUCLEAR POWER PLANT tenuous. I agree - close the damn thing down and replace it with an ultra-modern, more efficient, more powerful nuclear power plant instead. One that has the best new technology in it, rather than scraping together parts to run that old thing...

Pete, I could not agree with you more! They have made plenty of money with that old plant. Time to take out the old and bring in the new. Hope all is well with you..Al
