Just want to wish Dave, Walter and anyone else in the group heading out to Essex this weekend a safe trip.

We are looking forward to meeting up with you in Mystic on Tuesday!

Looks like we have a 2:00 launch to make moriches tides or earlier if we want to go ocean.
 
Anyone have any time estimates from to Essex from south shore?
 
It's about 40 minutes down the river, then about an hour over to Montauk.
 
Guys enjoy essex... Like i said i love the place... ( watch the 5mph zone on the river.. )

So about 2 hours to canal, then about 1.5 to Essex, I guess 3.5 hours. High tide moriches inlet is 2:30, want to be thru moriches. I think we want 2 hours past high for best moriches conditions. So if we leave lindenhurst at 3:00, hit moriches at 4:00, canal at 5:00, arrive Essex before 7:00 with a hour ot so of daylight left for good measure.

Sound right?
 
Call Essex on the VHF when you enter their channel, they will direct you to their fuel dock and give you your slip assignment from there. They are great people.

Not sure how long you will be at Essex but the dinner train is lots of fun. Good food, nice scenery, well worth a checkout.

Dave, Are you traveling the whole way on the inside? I usually stay at WHB as my mid way point traveling from / to Block or GP to time the locks and Moriches tides. You may travel faster than me, but here is a point of time measure.

I run at an average of 25mph. Leaving from LIYC, just a couple miles east of you, it takes me about 1:20-30 to the CG station in the Moriches. I rather hit the Moriches high tide no more than an hour past; two hours seems to me pushing it. WHB about 20 minutes. So overall about 2 hours to this waypoint.

From WHB to the locks is about one hour. (Remember the slow areas going though Quogue) Now if the locks are open, you run through, I like to time it when they just open or about to close. It is not rushing at these times. Allow extra time if you have to lock though, especially if boats are in line. It could be up to an extra 45-min or more.

From the locks to Greenport is about an hour. From GP though Plum Gut to Essex looks to be about an hour or more, then another 30-45 minutes up the river.

I could be estimating it incorrectly, but I know my overall trip to Greenport is always about 4 hours on the inside. I think dock to dock to Essex you are looking more like 5-6 hours.
 
Dave, Keep in mind that the current at the entrance to the CT river is relatively strong and you will need a bridge opening for Walter or anyone with a flybridge. As I recall, it opens on a schedule and there will be boats (mostly Sail) that will be zig zagging back and forth waiting.

Things you don't want to deal with in the dark.
 
Speaking of bridges- does anyone know the bridge clearances going from Peconic Bay thru the canal and then to WHB?

Andy, you may be SOL and have to go around to Sinnecock inlet. The Railroad bridge is 19' 5" and Fixed. The Sunrise Highway is 29' Now this is most likely be high or mean tide. Call the locks to verify - # 631-852-8299

The bridges to WHB will open on request when you get to them. A couple of toots and a wave of a Jackson. They drop a bucket and you motor on though. ;)

I am told I am 18.5 so I push it to the 19 to play safe
I would think there is a tide drop of at least a couple of feet- so as long as we are near the low tide swing we should be ok – I hope!
 
I know of boats bigger than Andy's that have gone thru, so I think he will be fine.

The bridge on the conneticut river, is that 24x7 that it opens? We may get there late.
 
I think I saw Dave and Walter cruising by from Watch Hill on Saturday. I saw a 34 Silverton and an express cruiser going by sometime early in the afternoon.

Dave and I took the ocean. Passed WH around 3pm.
Trip took 6 hours, Daves boat is so slow :)
