N.Y.C. Boat Show....

My friend has a 40 Formula with IPS and likes it. I would prefer the Merc Zeus, it just seems to me better to have props facing the way they should be.

Heading to the show now for an extended lunch hour... Should be there by around for about 2 hours. I was hoping to look at the Tiara Sovran 3900, but its not there. My main goal is to look at the difference of IPS vs. Zeus. Also to see if I can beat my friend’s pitiful record of docking that Viking in the pool with scores 96 and 106. I also may tease my good old sales reps at Sea Ray.
I found the show rather disappointing. The larger boats are almost completely gone from the show. Sure they had a few but not many. Nothing really new other than Merc finally showing Zeus. Using the same tired, "15% faster with 30% fuel savings" pitch. Means nothing until I see a Zeus vs IPS vs standard test with similar boats.
Lines like "virtually the same efficiency as our competitors" mean nothing! (forward vs rear facing props)
Most electronics manufacturers stayed home as well.

Let me know what you think of the show. I was thinking of skipping it since getting there will require serious effort and I am hearing mixed reviews.

Ok just got back.... Man not the same to say the least, got there just about 12:10. Did a speed walk up and down every isle, which was good exercise. Jumped on the Tiara 3500, ok…. I was hoping to see the 3900. Being a Sea Ray owner, I had to swing by my sales buddies, the 52 was sweet. Went to the smaller Sea Ray boats to see what they did with my 320, which is now the 330 with less room, bigger engine so now 40k more. And what’s with the new transom swim platform fold down seat. I felt like I should be trying on shoes, seems so out of place.
The remote control boat docking exhibit was not open :--(
All and all not the worst show, but my highlight was getting the Hebrew National foot long dog for $5.00 instead of the standard size no name for $4.50 at the other booth.

Admission (no fee pass this year) $15
Hotdog and soda $8.50
A little lunch time getaway from work looking at boats… Priceless

The Admiral says she wants to go so looks like I'll be there at 5pm tomorrow.
I went to the show tonight after work. I'd say it's pretty much the same as the last couple years. Pretty much all of the inboard sportfishing boat manufacturers have abandoned the show, only ones I saw were the 36 Bertram express, 36 Wellcraft and a couple of Luhrs models. Quite a few outboard fishing boats, and lots of express cruisers and Meridian, Sea Ray, Carver, Silverton, etc. The accessories were all back together in one spot like they used to be, as others have mentioned the big electronics manufacturers were not there. I wasn't looking to buy anything but that's disappointing as far as doing research and talking to the reps next time I do need something...
For me there's not a lot of boats at the show that interest me and I wouldn't go too far out of my way to see it, but for a couple hours after work during the winter it's still a nice change of pace, and I had a free ticket this year. In comparison, I can spend 2 days at the Annapolis show and not run out of things to see, Atlantic City I can spend most of the day, the NYC show I'm done in 2 hours or less...
I went on the Ovation... I'm not sure I'd want to maintain triple engines... When I was there the salesman was telling a couple "You'll want to buy a boat with IPS because it's the new technology and in 10 years EVERY boat will have IPS" The boat looked to be pretty nicely finished but it seemed like too many steps up and down inside, some doors banging into each other belowdecks. The full beam master was nice, but even that stepped up on the side. They do fit a lot into the boat though. I didn't look too closely but the galley seemed a little small for that size boat and almost in the path of people going down below. For the number of people who were on the boat (not a lot) it seemed like it took a lot of coordination to move around without bumping into people.
Rob, I stopped at the Treasure Cove booth and picked up a brochure and asked what the transient rate was. I spoke to Lorna, and said 'one of my friends spent a month at your place last summer". She said, "oh, that must be Rob" and I asked if that was your boat on the front of their brochure and she said yes, and that there were other pictures on the board
I decided to walk over from Penn Station rather then wait for a cab and I'm lucky I didn't get frostbite... This global warming stuff is really getting bad

I used to be impressed by the NY show until I went to the Miami show last year. I want to do the Ft Lauderdale show one year, that's even bigger.
There were hardly any boats over 50' I'm not surprised. I can't imagine anyone buying a boat like that at a show. If I was spending over a million on a boat I would make an appointment and have the salesman's undivided attention rather than trying to look at a boat with some 8 year old little girl jumping on the bed yelling "Daddy buy me this boat. This is the one I want." That's the reason I try to go during business hours or right after work.
I only went to see the Meridian 441 and really liked it. I also liked the Ovation. I thought it was very elegant. I was dissappointed by both Azimuts (43 and 50) so they are off my list of dream boats. Sunseekers were nice but I'll only own a bridge boat from now on.

Went to the show tonight. Seems to be going down each year. There are no vendors along the wall to the left as there were in years past.
The Ovation was the only boat with any traffic.
We didn't really have much interest in the bigger boats there. Went through the Tiaras and looked closer at the Gradys, ProLines and other trailerable walk arounds.
Thinking about what we might eventually down-size to 5-6 years down the pike.
Not a great show.
